A Rail line near Munich and Salzburg blocked

Unfortunately there has been a significant train crash between Meridian trains on that line just on the German side of the border.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35530538 for details. That website stays current with frequent updates.

It looks to me that the line will be closed for some time.

Nigel - according to bahn.de there isn't any disruption to Munich-Salzburg trains. The crash was on one of the rural branch lines that Meridian operate, not the Munich-Salzburg main line.

Thanks for the detail, Philip.

I use the line between Salzburg and Munich, usually Railjet, but don't know the branch lines because my pass (staff) isn't valid on Meridian.

I saw the BBC report on the crash this morning and it looked dreadful. Apparently there was both a driver and a driver trainer on both trains, so it's hard to understand how this could have occurred. It will be interesting to see what the investigation uncovers.

Last May I took Meridian from Munich Hbf to Salzburg Hbf since that was the next train going to Salzburg. to transfer to Wien Westbahnhof. The DB train had been cancelled.. The Meridian train was also late in arriving in Salzburg. Rosenheim was one of the stops it made. I don't recall Holzkirchen. Both these places were mentioned in BBC and CNN coverage of the accident.

Holzkirchen is directly south of Munich, on the way to Bad Tölz or Tegernsee. One doesn't normally go from Munich to Salzburg via Holzkirchen, but Rosenheim is a regular stop on the way to Salzburg (or Innsbruck). The line from Holzkirchen to Rosenheim goes through Bad Aibling.
