Quick trip to Munich July

We are planning a trip in July to Munich. We would appreciate suggestions and feedback based on our planned itinerary below.
Also traveling with a teen, who is interested in cars, WWII, and violins. Parents love food and cycling.

Day 1 - Arrive early afternoon, get settled in, explore the city, dining (recommendations)

Day 2 - Munich Tour City, museums (recommendations), dining (recommendations)

Day 3 - Salzburg Day Train, Mozart Walking Tour, museums (recommendations), dining (recommendations)

Day 4 - Munich, Castle Tours (recommendations), dining (recommendations)

Day 5 - Munich, Dachau (recommendations), dining (recommendations)

We are still looking for lodging and appreciate recommendations, we'd like to stay in one spot as a base.
Thank you!

I would suggest that you stay at the EdenHotelWolff hotel, directly across the street from the main RR station on Arnulfstrasse.
It is very centrally located close to many of the sights and has an excellent restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a pleasant and comfortable bar in the building.
The staff all speak English and are very helpful with answers to all your questions.

If you have a car lover, the BMW museum and Welt are a must. We visited last month and really enjoyed our time-spent around 4 hours total including lunch in the Welt cafe. We did the Welt tour and found it worthwhile. We would have done a factory tour, but it was closed due to Easter holiday. Very easy to get to on the SBahn.

I would find it hard to do Salzburg in a day. I'd recommend a lot of research to determine priorities. The Salzburg Cathedral is Baroque, it's bright and stunning. Quite different from most churches I've seen in Europe. I also believe Mozart was baptized there. St. Peter's cemetery is the inspiration for the Sound of Music cemetery and is beautiful even with out that connection. The cemetery is at the base of the funicular that goes up to the fort. The views up there were pretty spectacular. Make sure to take advantage of the Bayern ticket to Salzburg which makes the trip super cheap. We ate dinner at the Old Salzburg Gasthaus Wilder Mann, a busy but cute little beer hall. The next evening we ate Indian food at Hunas which was right across from the Gasthaus.
In Munich, we had beer and pretzels at the Hofbrauhaus, it felt like a must do and we enjoyed the little polka band. We had dinner at the Augustiner Bierhalle on the Marienplatz. I would check the times for the Glockenspiel (might have been 11am), it is really worth seeing. The Residenz is huge, it goes on and on. Parts of it are really worth seeing. We also went to the treasury which was enjoyable. We really enjoyed Nymphenburg. It was an easy bus ride to get there. Its worth going into all of the churches in the old town. You might also make a trip through the market, which was fun and might be good for snacks, definitely for photography.

I always recommend Motel One for inexpensive, convenient and quality lodging. The Sendlinger Tor location is very close to the city center.

I would not recommend hotels near the main train station including the Eden Wolff (I’ve stayed here and in several others in the area). These are more geared to business travelers who need something close to the station or backpackers needed a cheap hostel type room. There is nothing wrong with this area but there are more convenient locations to see the city and transportation is so good in Munich there is really no benefit staying right next to the train station.

Depending on when you arrive you could do a self guided walking tour of the city center that first afternoon. Most guidebooks, including Rick Steves, have similar self paced walking tours of Munich.

If you enjoy cycling I recommend renting bikes (Mike's Bikes is popular) and make your own cycling tour. One route I suggest is to head north from the city center up through the Englischer Garten stopping at a beer garden for lunch, then head west to the Olympiapark and Schloss Nymphenburg, then return to the city center via Nymphenburg Str. and Königsplatz.

Salzburg is a common day trip form Munich given the frequent train service between the two cities and the fact you can use a Bayern Ticket to get there and back. Just don't expect to see everything the city has to offer in one day!

As for restaurants, July is a good time to visit several beer gardens. Just search the forum and you will find a wealth of recommendations.
