Questions re Eagle's Nest and Dokumentation Center

Hi all,
Planning to visit the Eagle's Nest and Dokumentation Center next month for a day. We're mostly interested in the history and the scenic views. We'll have a car. We plan to leave Salzburg by 8:30 in hopes of avoiding the crowds. My questions:

  1. I understand we need to choose our return bus time once we arrive at the upper bus depot before we take the elevator the rest of the way up. We'll want to admire the view, read the information placards on the sun terrace, and have a piece of cake in the restaurant. Does 2-3 hours seem reasonable?
  2. We're considering walking down from the top to the upper bus depot, i.e. skipping the elevator, just to enjoy more views. Anyone done this that can advise on how the walk is? My husband will take the elevator since he has a bad knee. The rest of us definitely aren't hikers and will be wearing sandals or tennis shoes so I'm wondering if it would be too much for us or is it an easy walk?

Thanks for any info!

The descent to the bus turning point is easy and the path is paved. But without sturdy shoes you can't make the scenic Kehlstein circular trail (Kehlstein-Rundweg; approx. 1 hour, don't try it with sandals), and you'll lose the best part of your trip.

Similar to what I was going to write.

I do really enjoy the views and the walk up there, but flat as a pancake it is not.

Yes, you do have to reserve your bus time down when you arrive at the upper bus parking lot. I think they reserve a few spots for people who want to leave early or miss an earlier bus, but I wouldn't count on it.

Depending on how much the history and view catch you fancy, 2-3 hours might be too little time or to much time. I know I spent at least two hours on the top, probably a little more. If you have time, you can hike up to the cross and look back at the "Nest" with the valley beyond it.

I know I walked down instead of taking the elevator at least once, and I don't remember it as being at all a difficult walk. It's a gentle switch-back, paved trail.
