Questions/Help on visiting Neuschwanstein Castle

My son and his friend will be traveling to Germany this summer. For the most part they will be staying with friends in Heidelberg but they want to travel down and see Munich, then stop at Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle. They are both barely 19. They will travel by train to Munich. I have a few questions.

  1. What would be the best way for them to travel to the area from Munich If recommended they could stay the night in Fussen and visit the castles the next morning since I know you should get your tickets early. That would give them time to sight see this area on foot if that is recommended?

  2. Should we purchase tickets for them in advance or wait?

From here they will travel back to Heidelberg. Before striking out on their own to see Munich they will have stayed with our friends in Heidelberg for at least a week.

I hope this is clear. Please if you have any suggestions or ideas it would be appreciated. They cannot drive a car and must travel by either train or bus. This is their High School graduation present. Thank you for your help and positive suggestions.

There is no good reason to purchase the tickets in advance. Since the trip can only be done by regional trains anyway, just purchase a Bayern-Ticket (28€ for the two of them) from an automat that day. Regional trains do not have reservations. Just get on the next train and take a seat. There are usually plenty of empty ones. The Bayern-Ticket is only valid after 9 AM on workdays, but if they are staying the night, they can travel to Füssen in the afternoon.

We travelled to Fuessen and spent the night, then saw the castles the next morning and that is what I recommend. Make reservations for the castle tour.

Their friends in Heidelberg should best be able to figure this out. There may be a tour bus excursion to the castles that they can join. If their friends are there with the US military, there is almost assuredly a service their that makes trips to the major tourist destinations.
