Purchasing train tckets

I and my wife will be taking a train from Prague to Nuremberg in late November and then on to Regensburg the next day and finally on to Munich.
My question: what is the procedure for using a ticket automat ? I have a. chip card with no foreign transaction fees, but do I need some sort of password? I'm concerned about entering a station without a ticket window. I plan to purchase all of my tickets on the day of travel
Thanks for any information

The fastest route from Prague to Nuremberg is the bus. IC Bus from the Prague Main Train Station or the FlixBus from the Prague Main Bus Ststion. These all require reservations, although you can get tickets at the last minute at the ticket windows. These take about 3 1/2 hours. You could buy a day or two in advance on-line for substantial savings.

The SuperCities train to Cheb connecting to a regional train to Nuremberg also has a required seat reservation and takes 4 3/4 hours. Again it might be best to buy at a ticket window at Prague Main Train Station. The SuperCities train itself is quite nice, with 1+2 seats, you can order food right at your seat or go to the bar/restaurant car, which is something of a rolling Czech pub.

Nuremberg Hbf is a very large station with banks of DB automats. If your credit card does not work, just use cash. A Bayern Ticket for 2 at 28 EUR total will suffice. Same for Regensburg to Munich. There is also a Servus Ticket available for this route for 25 EUR, but the Bayern Ticket will allow you to use all the Munich public transit for the rest of the day.

No, you don't. And if you want to buy at the ticket window, the service center in Nürnberg Hbf is in the western wing of the central east - west hall.

On the use of a Bayern-Ticket, which is only valid on regional trains vs. using an express train such as the ICE, there are more expensive ICEs between Nürnberg and Regensburg every two hours; they take 55 minutes. However, about 35 minutes earlier, there is a direct regional train (RE) that takes only 1:02 to 1:04, and you can use the much less expensive Bayern-Ticket.

For Regensburg to Munich, the only direct connections are by regional trains (RE or ALX). There are some connections using an ICE, but they take longer and require a change of trains. Use a regional pass. As Sam points out, the Bayern-Ticket is only 3 euro more than the Servus-Ticket and allows you unlimited use of the conveyances of the MVV (Munich metro) for the rest of the day.

Use a regional pass.
The Bayern-Ticket can simply be bought at the station on the same day (or the day before if you don't want to run the risk of a long queue while your train is about to leave).
