Dear All.
Can you let me know the current transportation status between Salzburg and munich
I have already booked the hotels 2 months ago and didn't expect the current issues regarding the refugee .
I already know from news that the trains are stopped , what about the buses?
Will it be possible I can't get on the bus even though i reserve the seat?
Thanks in advance?
The trains are running. They were temporarily delayed due to refugees on the tracks but are running normally again. I would expect the train situation to remain normal, but you may possibly experience a small checkpoint somewhere along the route. As of yesterday the German police have opened up a control point on the Austrian border entering Germany which is causing large delays on the Autobahn. If I were you, I would travel by train over the buses at this time.
What about train service between Munich and Prague?
There are four of us trying to get to Munich on Saturday frome Salzburg. I know the situation is fluid and I will wait till last minute to change plans. I have train tickets and am trying to decide if I should buy bus tickets as well. Any advice? I could rent a car and would need a route to avoid backup on border . Thank you in advance !
I just answered this on another thread. Apparently the express trains (IC/EC/RJ) are not running between Munich and Salzburg. The Meridian website (Meridian runs the regional trains from Munich to Salzburg) reports that their trains are only going to/from Freilassing, on the German side of the border. There are replacement buses taking passengers from Freilassing into Salzburg, but they are not taking passengers from Salzburg to Freilassing.
Thank you so much!!!! You have been most helpful. Truly appreciate it. If things change can you please advise? I am in touch with my concierge but two of them are not very helpful. As it stands now I have rented a car.
I'll be watching this and similar threads myself. We fly into Salzburg one week from today, plan do enjoy the Rupertikirtag (St. Rupert's Fest) that weekend, Monday in Berchtesgaden, then Tuesday morning to Oktoberfest. We plan to take the train back to Salzburg on Wednesday evening. It's not our first time at any of these destinations (at least for two out of four of us), but we are concerned how migrants will negatively impact our travel plans. We planned to take the train from Salzburg to Munich but not sure if that will be an option now. I guess I'll have to take a look at reports towards the middle of next week.
We have been told bus 24 runs from the bus station to frasselburg where we can pick up the train. They are telling us that all we need show is our train ticket to Munich and we can get on the bus. Apparently this is worked out with the train . If someone knows that this is not so please respond as we leave tomorrow morning. A fellow traveler gave us this info as this is how she went back and forth from Munich to Strasberg .
I meant freilassing
I meant freilassing
Please let us know how it goes, Cynthia. I'm surprised you're not staying longer for the fest in Salzburg. It is fantastic; I prefer it to Oktoberfest. We leave in one week. Usually at this point, I'm monitoring the weather. That's a minor concern now, unfortunately.
We are staying in Salzburg again on Monday night. I'm thinking it might be wise to switch that to a hotel west of the border. We'll see. We are spending Monday in Berchtesgaden. I hate to cross the border 4 times within one week.
cynthia: a car rented in Austria typically cannot be returned in Germany without a very heavy foreign drop-off fee. Check with your agency if that's the plan.
We rented they Costco and it was expensive but we are splitting it with another couple. Do you think the buses will take us to freilassing ? We would prefer to go by train.
I have no information about the trains as of now. But it's a mere 8 km - 5 miles - to Freilassing from Salzburg. You could almost walk! But if the trains are running from Freilassing to Munich as has been suggested on this thread, and if there are no buses to Freilassing, then why not look into getting a taxi - and split THAT fare instead?
There wasn't a long line today. We went by bus and were pulled off bus for passport checks. We made it to Munich no thanks to Austria. Very little help and not very good information. Some of the Austrian citizens came up to us and told us that we should complain to the police as they aren't taking care of the holiday travelers. It was very confusing. We were told that a bus would take us to the border town of frassinglein but that did not happen. We ended up following other lost people and finally took bus 2 and then bus 24(which wasn't running regularly) and then walked to train station. We were also pulled off bus by police and had to show passport. All in all not a very good border crossing. A taxi would have helped some but we were told long border lines which was not the case.
Thanks for the info, Cynthia. Did you have to buy a new train ticket from Freilassing to Munich? I have a ticket for Salzburg to Munich for Monday that I bought a month ago. Just wondering if that will work or if I need to rebook. Thanks again.
