Is there something wrong with the taxis in Berlin that I don't know about?

Sam, given the depth of your knowledge I'd be surprised if there was anything you didn't know!!!

Lorraine, are you looking for a meet and great? To have someone pick you up outside baggage claim and whisk you off to your hotel?

On my first trip to Berlin, I used public transportation to get to my hotel from Tegel. It was cheap, but a little challenging to do when jet-lagged (even with just a single carry-on bag)

On my second trip to Berlin, I decided to arrange for a pick up at the airport. I used Blacklane. They were really, really good. I missed my connection in Amsterdam due to a late-arriving inbound flight from the US. I called Blacklane from Amsterdam to let them know I was going to be on a later flight, and they changed the reservation without charge. Once at Tegel, it was super nice to walk off the plane, through baggage claim (no checked bags, of course), and out the baggage claim doors to find a guy holding a tablet with my name on it. As I recall, the pickup cost about 35 €. For me, it was totally worth it.

Edit: Checked my credit card bill. It was 40 € (tip included in booking price). I was to fly out on Air Berlin a week later, but the flight got cancelled after boarding. I think I spent around 25€ on a cab ride to the Motel One by the Berlin Hbf (main train station).

I agree with Dave. From Tegel to Bahnhof Zoo I always used public transport. Twice from Bahnhof Zoo used a taxi to get to the hotel-Pension which would have been ca a 50 min walk. The main reason was the same: the taxi driver could find the hotel better than we could since upon arriving at Bahnhof Zoo it had been 10 plus hours on the train from Paris.

When I land after a trans-Atlantic flight, I take a taxi rather than the train, even though I know how to take the trains and do so the other 330 days of they year. I'm tired and don't feel like waiting on a train or schlepping my bag with me.

No need to pay extra for a car service to stand there waiting on you with a sign. There are taxis everywhere and they have a set price, with a meter.

Thank you everyone...great advice and now to decide taxi or car..think we are leaning for a taxi.. We can now relax on our flight knowing we will let someone else find our hotel..
