Prien am Chimsee

Our group of 4 seniors are driving from Munich to Salzburg. I've seen on other boards that a great place to stop between these two beautiful cities is Prien am Chimsee. We probably don't have time to go to Herrenchimsee, so we're going to settle for having lunch in Prien. Any restaurant ecommendations for lunch? I'm sure we'd like something on the lake to take in the view. If we don't go to Herrenchimsee, is there another land-bound sight to see after lunch? Thanks for your responses.

If you have a car there is no need to go to Prien / Stock, where everybody arriving by train will gather. Rather I'd go to Gstadt on the west bank of the Chiemsee (great alpine scenery looking south). There are several restaurants there. Maybe you have even time to take the short boat ride ( twenty min., departures every 30 min) to the Fraueninsel, see the Benedictine Abbey Frauenwörth and have your lunch on the island.

We enjoyed the food at the Neuer am See hotel/restaurant; on the Lake near the boat dock. (We spent a night at the Neuer/See to get "unjetlagged".) If the weather is nice, you might consider picking up picnic supplies and eating lakeside; as I recall there are benches in the park/promenade. Finally, the boat ride to Herrenchiemsee is a pleasant experience if you can carve out some time. We didn't tour the palace, but enjoyed the walk and gardens.

I second the picnic idea. It’s what we always did when we stopped at the lake on the way east from Munich.
