Prague in February?

We are planning a trip to Prague in February (because of scheduling issues with family-this works best for us...). Are we nuts?

It'll be chilly but it's so beautiful there you won't mind...and maybe less crowded with tourists.

It could be like northeast USA. Be prepared for snow or maybe cold rain with this global warming. You are not nuts, crowds will be thinner. You didn't think Prague is in Germany, did you?

Prague was our gateway city to the Saxony region of Germany even though Prague is a Czech city. We spent half a week in Prague late February experiencing a mix of weather. Big advantage of February was low season lodging rates and smaller crowds. That said, Prague in February is not deserted and still pretty lively.

It's a very good idea to visit Prague in February since the lack of tourists means that you can actually see the Charles bridge, that the cathedral doesn't feel like a busy train station, and the Jewish cemetery isn't crowded with noisy teenagers.
I usually avoid all these places for most of the year and just visit them during the winter months.

You are absolutely totally, completely insane to go to Prague in February!! On the other hand Budapest is perfect in February.........

Okay, to be fair, it depends on your expectations and what you enjoy. The winter months in Central Europe are the high season for the arts. So if you like Opera, Ballet, Operett, Musicals, Concerts of all types and descriptions and some really good museum expositions then February is great. If you enjoy strolling the streets and people watching in the park ............. well not so good.

There will be a fraction of the tourists that are typical in August and that's a good thing (especially in Prague) but some of the businesses that rely 100% on tourism might be closed or curtailed somewhat. The weather tends to create situations where tourists and locals alike are forced into smaller spaces and that can be good if you want to learn more about the people and the culture and social habits.

We have been in the region in February and are looking forward to it again in a few months.

Rather than just pick a location and hope for the best, you might start looking for events that take place in February in various parts of the region

Cologne: Carnival
Budapest: Opera Ball http://shakespearebal.hu/news/v/290/
Mohacs: Busójárás http://www.mohacsibusojaras.hu/
Prague: Annual Duck Pluckers Anonymous Convention
