HI
We are doing a day trip from Berlin. We are staying in Alexanderplatz. I understand there is a train that goes directly there. We would like to walk around and long distances are fine. Does anyone have a walking map that includes the Dutch quarter, the Russian area, the palaces and any other areas of interest? Most of the items I have found focus on going into the palaces.
Thank you
Tip: Use BVG journey planner to find best train connection - regional trains or S-Bahn. ABC ticket needed, do not forget ticket validation / time stamp after buying. Some more basic infos and tips for public transport in Berlin.
Tip 2: Re-check journey planner evening before traveling to Potsdam. Some WWII bombs still found around Potsdam main station area; therefore station was closed three mornings until afternoon in the last year for dismantling measures (example picture). Last one was this Januaray (report with photo in German).
Potsdam tourist map with sights at the end of this pdf brochure:

Check also the opening times of Potsdam parks and palaces prior to day trip.
Great tips thanks

From Alexanderplatz the S-Bahn goes directly to Potsdam Hbf, which is the terminus. When you get there, go to the Tourist Office on the top floor of Hbf., numerous brochures are available, info guided tours. During the commie days, The Soviet KGB HO was in Potsdam, if you're interested in that, that was featured in one of the guided tours I took of Potsdam. For that there are different companies.
The tours go to the Dutch Quarter too as well as Sans Souci and Neues Palais. Part of the grounds of Neues Palais now is the University of Potsdam. These palaces are only two among several in Potsdam. A postcard sold in the Tourist Office has the title, "Potsdams Schlösser." showing the other chateaux in Potsdam. If you're interested in doing something different, a river ride on the Havel which can be booked in the Tourist Office.
From Alexanderplatz you can also take RE1 regional train to Bhf Park Sanssouci, the former royal railway station close to the palaces.
