Potsdam

We are planning on spending a day in Potsdam, getting there via train from Berlin.

What we’d like to know is if you can hail cabs in Potsdam or if the tram system is a better idea.

Our itinerary for the day is getting off the train Berlin Wannsee station and then starting our day at Glienicke Bridge aka Bridge of Spies which is 6 kms away; we thought a cab would be best.

From Glienicke Bridge we will walk to Cecilienhof, its about a 20 minute walk through a park.

Once done there, we’ll take either a cab or tram from Cecilienhof to Sansouci Palace.

When we are done for the day, we can take a cab or walk to Charlottenhof Bhf and head back to Berlin.

Its not the time but the distances we are concerned with.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

We recently visited Potsdam from Berlin. We had a day pass for zones A, B and C which covered all our transportation needs from Berlin and in Potsdam. It was very easy to use the tram and to walk around Potsdam. No need for a taxi. It was a beautiful day.

Any reason for not taking the bus if it is too far to walk?

I was also going to mention that when we went there we took a bus after getting off the train and then started our walk at the bridge. We actually walked all the way from the Cecilienhof to town and then to Sansouci Palace, but I understand if you don't want to walk that far (although it wasn't that bad of a walk).

Thanks Nancy. That's basically what we wanted to know. I've found a map of the transit in Potsdam but my German is a bit rusty. If the bus or tram is there, that's the way we'll go. We really want to start from the Bridge and go from there.

We were looking at cabs mainly because of lost time on another trip and with only a set amount of time we didn't want to waste any time.

To get to the bridge you can either take the train to Potsdam Hbf and a tram from there, or alight at Wannsee and take the bus. The bridge crosses the state border, so while the tram is operated by ViP, the bus is operated by BVG.

No need for a taxi unless you are very pressed for time.

In front of Potsdam Hbf is a large bus depot, signs there point to which bus to take in order to get to which site, Neues Palais, Sans Souci, etc The Tourist Office is located on the top floor of the Hbf, loads of brochures and information on tours, etc.such as the river cruise on the Havel.

The tour companies are out in front of Potsdam Hbf vying for your business as you are exiting the station.

We had an A. B,C day pass from Berlin but after getting off the train we bought tickets on the Hop on Hop Off Bus. Goes to the Bridge of Spies and all around Potsdam. It was money well-spent since there was some commentary with historical information. We did use the tram to get back to the train station because it was more convenient.
