We are taking a Rhine River cruise on Viking in early November from Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland, with a continuation to Milan by train at the end of the cruise in Basel. As everyone probably knows, the river levels on the Rhine have been unusually low this summer which caused deviation and in some cases cancellation of some river cruises. Viking has given a full refund in the form of a voucher for another cruise in 2027, or partial credit if you take the cruise mixed with bus travel. I just learned that the time between September and early December are actually the worst times for low river levels, and that it is possible our cruise could be affected within a week of departure. We are flying into Amsterdam on 10/31 and out of Milan on 11/16. If our cruise is cancelled or we are given the option to cancel with a voucher for a later cruise. Since it will probably be too late to change the outbound flight, I'm looking for a Plan B to fill those dates, which could include possibly changing the return flight. All of our hotel reservations in A & M can be cancelled 48 hours before arrival, and the train tickets from Basel to Milan are fully refundable. Has anyone traveled a similar route and if so, to where, how and what to see? We are experienced independent travelers in parts of Europe and the UK using Rick's tools and this is our first cruise of any kind. Thank you.
