When I buy tickets in advance for their huge discounts, I always choose the option of an e-mailed pdf for printing at home. Tickets for day trips I get from the machine at the station.

Yes you can display them electronically to the ticket checker from the DB Navigator app. It's easiest if you register online first and login to make each ticket purchase. Then your tickets will display both online and in the app.
