Please help!! Trip to Stuttgart (and two other places) in a month!

Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions you have...

I need to be in Stuttgart for an event for about 4-1/2 days at the beginning of May (May 2-6). I will be traveling with my husband and two small kids (ages 4 and 7). We really want to see two other places while we are there, but I am stumped on which two places and what order to do things.

I already booked a flight into Munich (4/28) with the intention of staying about 3-1/2 days in Munich - then we would take a train to Stuttgart for my event, then we would somehow get to Prague (on 5/6), and would fly home from Prague on 5/10. However, now that I am looking at getting from Stuttgart to Prague, it looks like all day on a train which sounds like a crummy way to spend a vacation day with little ones.

I am willing to pay the change fee if I can come up with a better itinerary. I am not even wed to Munich - but I do kind of want to see Prague. If anyone has any suggestions for a good itinerary, things to do in each place and/or where to stay, I would be very appreciative. After doing extensive research on the internet, I am quite overwhelmed with the options.

Thank you!

Kids tend to like trains - a day's ride would likely be more fun for them than a day in Prague.

Not sure about your interests, but there are many places to consider that are closer to Stuttgart. These are in between Munich and Stuttgart:

Günzburg's Legoland

Romantic Road towns: Nördlingen... Harburg... Landsberg

South of Stuttgart - places in the Black Forest region; Gengenbach is a good base:

Gutach, Black Forest open-air museum, summer bobsled
Gengenbach
The scenic Black Forest Railway
Schiltach

North of Stuttgart: Heidelberg could be a good base town:

Heppenheim (and nearby wine towns)
Heidelberg
Bad Wimpfen and the Neckar River Valley
Speyer and the Technik Museum

There's no point in planning a new itinerary with details until you pick some new destinations. Check these out and do some more reading elsewhere to see what tugs at you.

If you can fly out of FRA, you may wish to include a visit to the Middle Rhine Valley.

Thank you very much for your reply! I had no idea there was a Legoland nearby. They will love that. Do you know whether I should get tickets beforehand?

Also - I take it from your reply that you think my current itinerary is doable?

Thanks again!

Going to Prague is doable. It's a tad over 6 hours if you use the train to Nuremberg and DB's intercity Bus from there (all one ticket, buy at DB.) The longer part is by bus - so there may be road delays involved. I traveled Prague - Nuremberg recently and we left 45 minutes later than scheduled. I'm not certain that Prague has much for kids, and if you don't like long journeys, I'm not sure it's worth the long trip when there are so many nice places nearby.

If you keep Prague, you could break the journey and see a really nice German city in 1-2 days by stopping over in Nuremberg on the way to Prague.

Besides Legoland there are other amusement parks that aren't too far from Stuttgart - maybe look into those if interested (I know NOTHING about them.)

I’ll add that you will be in Munich for Frühlingsfest (like a Mini Oktoberfest). Your kids will be the perfect age for the midway so defiantly don’t miss it.

Also in Munich your kids would enjoy the zoo and the Deutsches Museum (great museum and they have a hands on kids area in the basement).

Thank you so much!
So, The bus is a better option from Nuremberg to Prague (as opposed to a train)?

Hi,

The train from Munich to Prague does not start running until May 31. If you really want to take the train to Prague, then it has to be done from Dresden, that train starts in Berlin. Or, take the train from Vienna, ie Wien Hbf. Other than that the connection is by bus.

Rather than Prague, would you consider Strasbourg? It isn't as far from Stuttgart and it too is a historic, beautiful city.
