Hi. I'm traveling with husband and an 8 yo daughter to Zell am See via Munich. On our way back, we will be stopping over at Munich before we head home . Since we have roughly 2 and a half days and an inquisitive child along and we love hiking, the mountains and the lakes, please help us plan these couple of days. We reach on 30 th September noon and check out from Munich on 2 nd October morning.
Thanks in advance.
PS I would also like to visit the Dachau concentRation camp during this period. Are children allowed in ?
I've never been to Dachau so I can't speak for it. But we really enjoyed the Englischer (sp?) Garden in October 2015. My favorite things in Munich, aside from the beer, were the BMW World and Museum, which seemed to entertain the children who were there with their parents. It is across the street from the Olympic Park, which we also enjoyed.
Please post a trip report after your visit to Zell Am See - it's on my bucket list.
This is the link to the website for Dachau which has an FAQ including a specific question/answer about children visiting the site.
I really loved the Munich zoo (Hellabrunn) while we were there. It's located only a short distance from an underground station which also makes it very convenient.
In addition to the previous ideas, you might like the Deutches Museum. Devoted to Science and Technology, it has a lot of interactive activities.
I visited Dachau some 35 years ago. It was hard to shake off the images for a few days afterwards. It's worthwhile, but can be emotionally draining. You might want to schedule Dachau near the end of your trip to prevent "flashbacks" when you are enjoying the mountains and lakes. I don't know about admission policy for children, but I'd not have taken my boys at age 8; and would have hesitated even at age 16. Obviously it's your personal, family decision; but worthy of consideration.
