Planning 4 weeks in Germany

My husband and I would love help planning 4 weeks in Germany. We would like to start in Munich where we have been before, maybe spend 3-4 nights there. We would like to see some places on Romantic Road and the more interesting part of The Rhine Valley, but any other suggestions for places we would be grateful for. Any ideas for say 4 bases which would allow us to have a week in each place, taking public transport for day trips? We would make our way to Paris after Germany where our holiday will end.

What time of year?
Any specific areas of interest or activities?

This information matters a lot. 4 bases for 3.5 weeks is a fine idea, and it will be no problem to find day trips by public transport. But... even though the Rhine/Mosel are great, you probably don't want to be in those small villages in February or March. And no point in sending you to Berlin if you want to focus on small towns like the ones in the areas you mentioned. Or maybe you want a certain mix of megacities and towns.

marcia,

I agree with Russ - more information would be really helpful.

For an "interesting" part of the Rhine Valley, you might consider Bacharch or St. Goar. I found Bacharach to be a very convenient location to use as a base for day trips, including to the Mosel area to visit Burg Eltz.

For your stay near the Romantic Road, you might stay in Wurzburg or area, and just take a day trip to the usual favourite in that area, Rothenburg ODT. When using public transit, Rothenburg isn't the most convenient home base location as it's on a spur line from Steinach, so that will add transportation time each time you want to go somewhere.

Although it's in France, another location you could consider for a "home base" is the lovely town of Colmar. From there you can take a day trip to Strasbourg or other nearby locations.

I'm sure one of the Germany experts here will have lots more suggestions.
