Places to stay within Paris and Barcelona when traveling by train

Hi, we are looking for places to stay that are reasonable, clean, friendly, and local. We will stay in Paris for thee nights (beginning 9/17/14) and then we travel to Barcelona (9/20/14) stay three nights there as well. From Barcelona we will travel to Nimes and Lake Como getting on off the train as we travel along the French & Italian Riviera. We have our train passes for Paris, Barcelona, and Nimes .

We hope this a doable plan so any advice would be helpful and give us more to ponder.

We love the local scene and love to walk. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Cindy, you have posted this in the Germany forum; you'll get a lot more responses if you post in General Europe. Are you looking for hotels near the Paris and Barcelona train stations? There are a number of major stations in Paris, so you'll need to tell us which station is of interest. BTW, my daughter and I visited Nimes last summer as a day trip from Montpellier and had a great day; we saw the Arena, the Maison Carre, the fountains, and enjoyed wandering the small streets. Also the day we were there they had an agricultural fair right in front of the train station, with cows and donkey rides and chickens and ducks and sheepdogs showing off their skills; when we tore ourselves away from that, we ran into a vintage car parade. We had originally booked a room in Nimes at the Hotel de l'Amphitheatre, very near the Roman arena, but ended up staying in MPL instead.

September is a busy travel month in these cities, so don't set your sites on one particular hotel recommendatin. You will have better luck to use a hotel search engine, or to contact multiple guidebook hotel listings at once, in order to find places that have rooms available in your price range.
