Places to stay, things to do in Bad Canstatt, Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nordlingen

Flying into Stuttgart in late August and will probably want to stay in Bad Canstatt because I was stationed there many years ago. Since I will be joining a tour group later in Salzburg I will be using the trains. Will spend 2 nights in Bad Canstatt and than 1 night each in Rotehburg and Nordlingen. Input will be appreciated.

In Stuttgart the Staatsgalerie and the Mercedes-Benz Museum are the highpoints. The Kunstmuseum is mostly post-war art, but also worth visiting if you like Otto Dix. The Porsche Museum is imo missable unless you are a SERIOUS Porsche enthusiast, as there are a lot of different variations on the 356 and 911 on display and it gets a bit dull.

In Noerdlingen, I think the tourist office has a free or cheap leaflet guide to the historic centre. It's very attractive. Also it's worth visiting the railway museum if you're interested, which is on the opposite side of the railway line to the centre. It's open Thurs-Sun plus public holidays. I don't know if it's worth visiting both Rothenburg and Noerdlingen, as the latter is basically a much less touristy version of the former. Maybe go to Nuremberg instead of Rothenburg?

You'll be mainly using regional trains, so there's probably no discounts for booking train tickets in advance.

I really loved Nördlingen. Yes, it is a less touristy (lacks a Christmas Shop and Crime & Punishment Museum) version of Rothenburg, but it does have an almost complete wall with a Wehrgang you can walk on, lots of Fachwerk buildings, and a church tower you can climb for a great view of the city. Nördlingen sits inside an ancient meteor impact crater (das Ries) and there is a museum about it (closed Monday, as I found out).

For more information, go to www.noerdlingen.de. It's in German, so you might have to have Google translate it for you.
