I can recommend Hotel Martha. It is in a quiet quarter in Dresden Neustadt, 5 min from the Dresden Neustadt station. To the center around the Frauenkirche at the other side of the Elbe there are frequent trams; walking time is approx. 15 min.

Last September we spent one night at Aparthotels an der Frauenkirche (recommended in RS guidebook). It was a large apartment -- small kitchen but lots of room in bedroom and living room. I think the bathroom was kinda normal size. The view from the living room was of the Frauenkirche! How can you beat that. I don't remember what we paid, but probably not more than 125 euros. We walked to the train station; I would say it was a tad long but doable. Check it out -- www.aparthotels-frauenkirche.de

I'll be staying at the Holiday Inn Express in mid September, approximately a 15 minute walk from the main station. I always check Google Maps for location of hotels.

There isn't anywhere in Dresden that is within walking distance of the railway station and attractions, as the station is some distance from any area of tourist interest. I would pick closeness to attractions rather than the station.

Note that the Neustadt station recommended by sla019 is not served by longer-distance trains, but only more local ones.

The main train station is 15 minutes away from the reconstructed old town. A few hotels, like Holiday Inn or NH, are between the train station and the attractions, Which means you walk 10 min or less to both.

Yes, my hotel was not on the direct path between the train sfation and the restored area, but I found both walkable. What I found unacceptable was that the air conditioning was non-functional for my entire 4-night stay. Can't remember the name of the place, but I think it was something like Art 'Otel. One of those high-style places that look good but are a triumph of form over function. And I don't mean just the non-working a/c.

On Dresden I would not rely on google for hotel location relative to the main train station.

I stayed at the Intercity Hotel located across from the train station. The AC worked perfectly, the beds were large and comfy and taking the tram to the sightseeing spots was easy. I think they even had free tickets to use for this.

I've stayed twice at the Ibis Dresden Hotel Lilienstein, one of three Ibis hotels in a row. They're all about a 5-10 minute walk to the station (easy and level) and about 15 minutes to the Altstadt. However, while the hotel itself is fine (many German tour groups, great huge breakfast buffet for €10 that can keep you going almost to dinner), the immediate area of the hotel itself is vintage Soviet style. Despite more recent attempts to spruce it up, it's not very pretty.

The hotel is a good deal, and because it's large, it had a vacancy when other smaller and more atmospheric places were full.

Fred - really? Why not?

edited to include the following: I have used Google Maps for determining hotel locations in numerous cities in Germany, and for walking directions to each, and estimated time is usually "spot on" unless I windowshop or dawdle, taking photos on the way.

I don't use google in Germany, don't rely on it either, that area in Dresden discussed here I am familiar with, was there the last time most recently last summer.

I've stayed at the NH Collection Dresden (Altmarkt) which is just about halfway between the main train station and the old town area. Easy direct walk from the station but closer towards the nicer part of the city and old town. Also right next door to the Kreuzkirche which is interesting to visit (and has a great view from the tower), and plenty of shops/restaurants around. The hotel has a standard 'chain hotel' feeling so not exactly loaded with character, but the room was a very good size and the price was quite reasonable for the quality. Was perfect for us for proximity to both Dresden Hbf (arriving by bus from Berlin-Schönefeld Airport and departing by train) and the sights.
