Place to stay in Stuttgart

My husband and I will be arriving in Stuttgart by train around 6pm and staying for 3 nights at the beginning of June 2014. We fly out of the Stuttgart airport at 11am. We are looking for a clean, centrally located hotel but it doesn't have to be anything fancy.

We plan to visit the Staatsgalerie, the Mercedez-Benz Museum, and the Porsche museum where we have 10am reservations to tour the factory (the main reason we are coming here per my husband's request). We like to walk and explore but I am having a hard time getting my bearings - I miss the Rick Steves city map but unfortunately Stuttgart is not in his Germany book.

Suggestions ??

Google 'Hotels near Porsche Museum' - this will give you several links. We did this tour 3 years ago. Cannot remember the hotel we stayed at The area is well served by public transport.

I don't know of any hotels in Stuttgart, but you probably don't want to stay in the immediate area of the Porsche or Mercedes-Benz factories. Both are located in pretty charmless industrial suburbs. They are also very close to an Sbahn stops, so you could easily stay somewhere in Stuttgart-Mitte.

I know Sarah from Stuttgart (Helpline regular) has grown to love her adopted town, but it isn't a city that immediately wins people over. Another option if you're looking for something a little more photogenic would be nearby Ludwigsburg, or if you want to commute a little further, Esslingen or even Tübingen.

Thanks George for the map link - that is a great map and helps me get my bearings a bit.
I ended up booking a room at the Hotel Unger near the main train station.

This will be an adventure and the 2 car museums will keep my husband happy.
