Place to stay- Berlin

Hi, I am traveling solo to Berlin mid-June and would like tips on where to stay (somewhere near Gemäldegalerie). Thanks for any ideas.

Dee,

I'm not sure where Gemäldegalerie is, but I'd highly recommend Pension Peters. It's in a nice area between Zoo station and Savignyplatz, so good transportation options.

Also in the general area of Pension Peters is Hotel Pension Columbus, where we have stayed on two visits to Berlin. Great breakfasts, great hostess, comfy rooms, good price. And walking distance to Ku'dam shopping.

Pension Peters is located at the corner of Savignyplatz and Kantstraße.

The Gemäldegalerie is just south of the Tiergarten toward Potsdamer Platz from the Zoobahnhof. From Savignyplatz, take the M49 bus to Zoo-Garten and change to the 200 bus to Tiergarten. Couple of blocks from there.

Hi, Dee. Glad you're going to Berlin... it's one of my favorite places to go. Berlin is very spread out, but public transportation is excellent, so you can stay pretty much anywhere and still have good access to the Gemäldegalerie. The immediate area around the Gemäldegalerie consists of a lot of embassies. To the east is Potsdamer Platz, which has a lot of hotels but is heavy on the capitalism/consumerism vibe. Savignyplatz definitely has character. The Prenzlauer Berg area also has a lot of character, especially around Kollwitzplatz.

I will make my 3rd-annual weeklong-stay this May at mittendrin, an awesome 4-room B&B located in a building built in 1905 near the Kaiser WiIhelm Memorial Church and owned by a former stage actress from Munich. The B&B and the owner are lovely, but her single room shares a hall bathroom with another room, which may be a deal breaker for you. The building also does not have A/C.

My advice is to find an area of the city that looks interesting to you and then find lodging that is within a few blocks of a U station in that area.

I agree that because of the excellent public transportation options you can stay almost anywhere in Berlin and be able to get to any sight easily. I stayed at Pension Peters also and loved the area, very convenient to both the S-bahn and U-bahn and there is also a bus that runs right by it. I did visit the Gemaldegalerie and it was very easy to get to by public transport but it did also involve a walk of a few blocks.
