Phone use in Germany

Plan to bring an unlocked GSM phone on the tour to Germany, Czech and Austria and wondering what more I need to do. Can I get a SIM card in the Berlin airport that will work in all three countries, and is that even necessary if I get the WhatsApp Messenger app?

Thanks for any advice.

If the SIM card works in your phone in Germany, it should work Europe-wide. You'll consume minutes quicker outside of Germany, but it will work.

Joe,

The first thing to check is whether the GSM phone has the necessary frequency bands for Europe. What type of phone is it?

You shouldn't have any trouble buying a PAYG SIM card in Berlin. I don't know if they're available at the airport, but you could also wait until you get to your hotel, and then ask the desk staff where the nearest mobile phone shop is. The SIM card will work in other countries, but your minutes will deplete faster once you leave the country of purchase, since you'll be "roaming*. Be sure you're clear on the method for topping-up outside the country of purchase.

I don't user WhatsApp but doesn't it really on Internet access and not on minutes or voice? I thought it was a data messaging service - if that's true, you don't need a SIM for calling - you'd need a SIM with a data plan...unless you're planning on using Wi-Fi while you're traveling-

Joe, WhatsApp will only help you where you have internet access. Public WiFi is not too common in Germany due to legal restrictions.

Joe,

You can use WhatsApp, Viber and similar apps anywhere you have Wi-Fi or cellular data. Most hotels provide Wi-Fi for guests (often included with the cost of the room). If you want to use WhatsApp when you're out touring, you'll need cellular data.

In order to minimize data charges and the possibility of going over the limit, I usually leave cellular data "off" unless I absolutely need it, and limit most internet access to Wi-Fi.

I have an unlocked I Phone. I always buy a sim card in Germany but it does not work in other European countries. I went to Holland and also Italy. Each country has a different sim card, don't ask me why.
