A simple question on ground travel vs. river cruise in Europe and the advantage of one over the other. Was looking at a cruise from Switzerland to Holland wide a side to Luxembourg. My interest is more south and western Germany and Luxembourg.

Focus on a trip covering south and western Germany if it is to be those two areas. If not, then I would say go north and east in Germany (Hamburg, Berlin, Magdeburg, Leipzig, Luebeck, Cologne, Dresden, Weimar, etc....lots of choices. Drop the river cruise option. Assuming you have 14 full days, I would concentrate on 3-4 cities, depending on the distance from each other. I would consider the night train option if it applies to squeeze out more time.
