Pergamonmuseum and GHM exhibits

Looking for feedback for those who have been to Berlin and visited the "stand-in" exhibits (if you will) while the permanent collections at the Pergamonmuseum and German Historical Museum are closed.

Are the "Das Panorama" (Pergamonmuseum) and "Roads Not Taken" (GHM) exhibits worth seeing? We'll be in Berlin for five days and want to avoid museum overdose -- tricky given the embarrassment of riches in this city!

FWIW, here are the museums we're already visiting:
- Neues Museum and Alte Nationalgalerie (Museum Island)
- Gemaldegalerie, Neue Nationalgalerie, Design Museum (Kulturforum)
- Jewish Museum
- Hamburger Bahnhof Museum
- The Wall at Checkpoint Charlie Museum
- DDR Museum
+ the Berlin Wall Memorial, East Side Gallery, Topography of Terror, and maybe Potsdam too!

I haven't seen the stand-in exhibits you're considering but went to nearly all the others (not Potsdam) during a 6-day solo visit in 2015. I think I only ate in restaurants about three times, my other meals being sandwiches from bakeries. You have a really packed list there. Many of the museums are quite large, and Berlin is big. You'll lose some time moving from place to place.

It will be really important to organize your sightseeing geographically and avoid getting stuck in long ticket lines. I had issues with lines on Museumsinseln, and there are also potential ticket lines at the popular DDR and Wall at Checkpoint Charlie Museums.

You might be familiar with artist Käthe Kollwitz who lived and worked in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg for over 50 years. Her presence appears in various places in Berlin. The Käthe Kollwitz Museum owns one of the largest collections of her work - it recently moved to Charlottenburg. We visited last year when only one floor was being used for exhibits but it was very worthwhile.

I liked the Panorama because it is a different way to present a picture we have from these times but if you are more a fan of various single pieces you need to know that the selection of these pieces are limited in this one.

For "Roads Not Taken" (saw it only online) I think it is helpful if you need to be roughly familiar with German history and their interdependencies already - if visitors have no knowledge about it, they might be a little bit lost and less a fan of it.

Here you will find an epoche based overview of Berlin's history with a few recommendations.

Multi-awarded Berlin History app is also recommended.

maybe Potsdam too!

If you are a fan of impressionist art Museum Barberini in Potsdam is not to be missed.

Thanks, MarkK and jkh. Very helpful.

The history app looks fantastic. @jkh - definitely interested in Impressionist art and I confess to being more excited about the Barberini museum than I am about Friedrich's palaces.

I must admit that I have visited most of Europe's imperial and royal cities and find that I rarely visit the palaces. Most are beautifully done and very informative, I just don't have an interest in the lives of royalty, past or present. I do enjoy the art they collected and seek out those museums
