We will be traveling to Frankfurt in September for 2 weeks, visiting various cities in our way south to Munich and Garmish. I prefer inexpensive lodging to expensive hotels. Is it still possible to seek accommodations at town central locations?
I don't see why it would be impossible.
Many private B&B options are not available at the standard booking engines. For Garmisch, I suggest you begin here:
In general, I only stay in the center of cities/towns. I also try to stay in inexpensive accommodations. I'm not sure what your definition of inexpensive is, but I've typically stayed in 2 or 3 star places (probably more 2). I've also found those types of places tend to have more local charm. I've told people that the places I've stayed at in Europe are cheaper and more interesting than places I've stayed in the U.S.
While Garmish has an unusual website, most towns‘ sites have the format www.TOWN NAME.de. Most will list all the accommodations in town. These sites are always my first place to find a room.
And we have always had good luck with the local TI at the train station.
There are some budget hotel chains worth looking for: Ibis, Motel One, Meininger. Also hostels in various cities. On top of that you will often find very small family owned acomodations which are called "Pension". These you can find best by local tourism offices. Normally they are wll booked by workers.
Thank you all for your reply. Much appreciated!
