Passau area for 5 days...

First trip to Germany! We'll be in Passau after a Danube cruise, and have 5 days before we fly out of Munich. Looking for suggestions for what town to stay in, (should we stay in Passau, or do other nearby towns have more to offer?) and what day trips to take (by train.) We prefer scenic, charming, walkable smaller towns, with emphasis on food and wine (and castles!) Also, for this situation, is there a rail pass that would save money/ time? Thanks for your input!!

If you stick to Bavaria and Salzburg, you can use a daily Bayern Ticket for 31 EUR per day, as long as you stick to regional trains and travel after 9 am on weekdays. Assume that is 2 of you as you said "we". Bavaria goes from the shore on the Bodensee to the exurbs of Frankfurt to the Czech border to the Austrian border, so there is a lot to see within its borders.

You buy them out of a vending machine on the day you want to travel. Write your names in ink on the back of the tickets.

I didn't find that much of interest in Passau (maybe the pipe organ in the church, the biggest one in the world). Up the river is the town of Regensburg or the Bavarian Forest national park.

The thousand year old castle at Burghausen is the "longest" castle in the world, and interesting.

I liked the walks along the river front and through the old streets in Passau. It is an attractive place but I would not want to stay 5 days. We enjoyed the "Zum Alten Bräuhaus" for an atmospheric supper.

Regensburg and Landshut are also possible stops. Regensburg is my favorite tourist city in Germany with everything from Roman ruins to a Gothic cathedral. Landshut has a castle and a multitude of scenic facades. Both have several good restaurants.

This is very appealing part of Germany.
