parking in Munich near the Hofbrauhaus

Good morning....we are staying not too far out of the City, in a town called Eresing. We will have a rental car and would like to drive in to the city of Munich to go the Hofbrauhaus. Is it hard to park in the city? i don't believe we will be near a train station. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Your nearest station appears to be Geltendorf, about 4 Km from Eresing. I looked up Geltendorf on www.bahn.de and it appears to have 3-4 trains per hour into München HBF, with times between 27 and 45 minutes, depending on how many stops the train makes.
According to the map here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/48.0970/11.0318 there is parking at this station.
If it was me, I would drive to this station, park and get a train into Munich. A lot less stress.

Is it hard to park in the city?

Yes, extremely. There's only a few garages in the city center, and they fill up quickly in the morning. And navigating Munich by car is difficult, even with a GPS. If you absolutely must drive into the city, your most reliable parking option within a reasonable walking distance of the Hofbrauhaus is the Hauptbahnhof (about a 20 minute walk). But it would be much, much easier simply to drive to an Sbahn station and take the train into the city from there.

I second the recommendation to park at Geltendorf station and take the S-Bahn into town. The S4 gets you strait to Marienplatz in 48 mins (faster than driving) and runs every 20-40mins. A regional train will get you there even faster.

There are a lot of very narrow, or pedestrianised, or very busy or one way roads in the vicinity of the Hofbrauhaus. It is hard enough to walk around there let alone drive.

Oh, and you know how big those Mass steins are? Remember that most of the crowds coming out of the Hofbrauhaus will have the contents of one or more of those inside of them. Drive?

"A regional train will get you there even faster."

A regional train will only take you to the Hbf or Ostbahnhof. From there you will have to transfer to an S-Bahn anyway. Just take the S-Bahn all the way.

Geltendorf has a Park 'n Ride with 732 parking places.

My comment about regional trains includes transferring to any west bound S-Bahn at Pasing and continuing on to Marienplatz. It only saves you a few minutes but it's good to know this option if one happen to just miss an S-Bahn and a regional train is the next available option vs waiting up to 40min for the next S-Bahn. An MVV day ticket should be valid on the regional train.

But yes, I too would rather just take an S-Bahn the entire journey if possible.

You might as well forget it, ie, driving in to park. Absolutely not around the main train station. Take the public transportation to the Hofbräuhaus.

Last summer I drove in central Munich...big mistake. Take the advice of the above posters and ride public transport into the city. Parking is difficult even in relation to other big cities like Prague, Paris, or London. There is very little available in the way of public garages/lots and those that do exist are very tight and don't have many spaces. Street parking is extremely restricted.

I agree with the others. Park outside the city near a rail station, and take the local trains into Munich. I haven't checked, but Geltendorf is probably as good a choice as any.

When you arrive at Munich Hbf, you can walk to the Hofbräuhaus although it's a bit of a hike. You could also take the U-Bahn to Marienplatz as it's a short walk from there to the Hofbräuhaus.

Not to mention the problem of driving with a few Massen under your belt.

My partner is "mobility challenged" (she has a handicapped parking permit) so a few years ago, when we wanted to go from Hotel Münchner Kindl to Karlstor, we called a taxi. The walk would have been about 4 blocks, ½ km, but because of all the one-way streets in Munich, the taxi had to go more than a km.

Just an example of how hard it is to get around in Munich.

Ken, the S-Bahn goes directly from the Hbf to Marienplatz. The U-Bahn is roundabout and requires a change somewhere. But if they're coming in on the S4 from Geltendorf, as recommended, just stay on the train through the Hbf to Marienplatz, two stops later.

Lee,

Thanks for the clarification. I've used S/U-Bahn from the Hbf to Marienplatz in the past, but couldn't remember which one I used. On recent trips, I've found it just as easy to walk as it's not that far.
