My husband and I will be in Paris in Dec 2015. We want to make a trip to the Neuschwanstein Castle. We will have about 2-3 days starting Dec 14. I do realize there are many other things we could be doing at that time. But we need to do this. So please help us out with any tips on the best way to do this and perhaps if we could add anything else to that trip.
Thank you.
I looked up the Deutsche Bahn Intercity Express or ICE from Paris to Munich. It takes 6.40 hrs since it can go at 320 km/h. Fares start at 104 euro one way. Munich has excursion tours to Neuschwanstein Castle. This may be easier than flying.
As far as the train, you can actually get fares from Paris to Munich as low as 39 euro if you book 90 days in advance.
Dawn: do those fares apply to the ICE trains? Hopefully the border crisis will be over in December so all the trains will be running again.
@Kathleen. Yes, these fares are for the TGV/ICE train with a change in either Mannheim or Stuttgart. Total travel time is 6:02 - 6:18 hrs.
@Soumyatha. Are you thinking of staying in Munich or going directly to Fussen (which is 10 mins away from Neuschwanstein)? If you're staying in Fussen, the train from Paris takes 7:30-7:45 hrs and cost 49 euro each way. Will you be going to the Christmas markets at all in Munich? We haven't been yet, but it sounds great!
I found these times and fares on www.bahn.de
Thanks for your replies.
@Dawn - we will be staying in Munich. We plan to go to the Christmas markets as well.
Good to know about the Fares.
We went the other direction just this month and got a better deal buying separate tickets with a stop. If you can find the tickets for as cheap as the other posts, then disregard this message. But for us, it was cheaper to buy a ticket from Munich to Strasbourg from DB and then Strasbourg to Paris with Raileurope (yours would be in reverse obviously). And you would still be on the same train (you will have one transfer regardless of how you do it--TGV to ICE in Stuttgart or Mannheim) so buying the tickets separate would not mean you need to make an extra transfer. Or you could make a few hour stop over in Strasbourg, Mannheim, or Stuttgart and break up the trip a bit. 6.5-7.5 straight hours on a train isn't as bad as a plane, but it can still wear on you.
So you would make one day a travel day to get to Munich with dinner and a little site seeing. If you wanted to do the christmas markets, I would plan on more than just that evening. You could take part of the next day for markets and sites and then you could make the journey to Fussen and stay the night and would thus have to rush a little less on the next day. Then return to Munich the evening of the 3rd day to depart.
