Overwhelmed - Bad Durkheim

Flying into Zurich September 11 w/schedule wide open till Glacier Express September 18 in Zermatt, then Munich September 20-23 (then flying back to US from Munich). 4 adults traveling exclusively via rail (Swiss-Germany rail pass). Interested in Wurstmarkt but am open to other small, fun towns/local wine festivals. Looking at VRBO vs hotels. Couple of days here, couple of days there - overwhelmed! Please advise - never been to Germany or Switzerland. 3 of us 49-50 years old and our very young 73 y.o. mom. Thank you for your help!

Your question is overwhelming. Here is a website for Wine festivals (Weinfeste) for Franken (Franconia in English). You can lookup possibilities by Month (lower left)

I like the area around Würzburg that includes Sommerhausen, Ochsenfurt, Marktbreit, Iphofen, Volkach etc. All are attractive with local wines. I like the wine in this region but is it a little dry for some. We prefer to stay in Würzburg and visit the local area. I know that Ochsenfurt and Iphofen have many rooms.

Other wine areas will have a similar spread.

For a couple of days here and a couple of days there you will do better with hotels, inns, b&bs (or possibly Airbnb). Very few of the VRBO rentals I looked at for my European trips rent for less than 3 nights - not saying there are none, just not that many.
