Overnight suggestions in northern Germany?

Greetings,
I'm working out a driving itinerary that will first take us from Calais (via chunnel) through Ghent and Bruge and then up to Vejle, Denmark to see friends. After that we are headed to Heerlen, Netherlands (to stay at Kasteel Terworm) and to the Rhine. Unfortunately, it's an 8 hour drive from Vejle to Heerlen and I'm not familiar at all with northern Germany. Does anyone have suggestions for a place to stay en route?

Thanks for any help,

Chris

I'm confused - do you want somewhere to stay between Vejle & Heerlen to break up the 8 hr drive or are you looking for somewhere between Heerlen and the Rhine? If the latter, where on the Rhine - its a big river?

Somewhere between Vejle and Heerlen. After that it's a short hop to our next stop in Koblenz, I believe...

It's not exactly half-way, but the fabulous city of Hamburg would be my choice. The brick-Gothic port city of Lübeck would also be a good choice. If you wanted to go out of your way a little to see the "Neuschwanstein of the north", you could consider Schwerin.

Thank you so much, Tom. I will read up on these spots. I appreciate it!

I agree with Tom's suggestion of Hamburg. Here's one of mine: this may be out of your way depending on which route you're taking, but Hannover is a cool place to visit also. Great museums and lots of World War II history: a manmade beach created by the Nazis, buildings bombed by the Allies and left as memorials.

Thanks so much, Sarah! Nothing like advice from people who have been there :)
