Overnight location, logistics for train & Dachau Concentration Camp Munich Germany

We will arrive Munich Airport. Will stay 1 or 2 nights in April of 2024 on way to Prague. Need help. Convenient area to train station. We plan on taking train to visit Dachau, and we will need to take the train to Prague. We have not decided it if will be a quick stop for one night or if we will do 2 nights. We are 4 adults and fine with the overnight travel and then visiting camp on day of arrival. Suggestions for other close, main things to visit also appreciated. Mainly want to secure lodging in a walkable location for the train. Many thanks.

The train connection from airport to downtown is the local aboveground bahn, not the DB trains.
So you'll want to head downtown to be close to either the Bahnhof or Ostbahnhof, which is most
likely where your train to Prague will depart from.

Google Maps will show you that there are tons of hotels in the area of the main train station,
and it's walkable to Munich city center, Hofbrauhaus, Residenz, art museums, etc.

Get the day group AirportPLUS-Ticket for the S-Bahn, and 4 of you can travel from the airport to
downtown Munich and then to/from Dachau for 30 euros total, a good deal.

Thank you so much. So you are saying we would arrive Munich AP, but a ticket for the above ground (bus) to take us into downtown area. Can this ticket be purchased when we arrive at AP? Then we will check into our hotel and from one of the two stations you listed, depending which is closest we will take train into Dachau? Can this ticket be purchased on site or do we need to purchase in advance? We should purchase one ticket for all 4 passengers, will the return trip be open or do you have to pick a time? Also will the bus ride to Dachau be included in this ticket? Lastly what site do you suggest for ticket purchasing? I appreciate your help. Thank you

It is very easy to use public transportation to the memorial. S2 line to Dachau station. Then take the 726 bus (runs about every 10-15 minutes) to the memorial entrance. The MVV app is very useful for Munich area public transportation.

The memorial has a few options for visiting. Admission is free and there is a great deal of information available onsite next to exhibits. Another option is to get an audio guide. The final option is to go on a tour.

Be aware that once you enter the Memorial there is a great deal of walking involved as you go to different parts of the complex. Personally, I would do two nights in Munich.

Edited after reading your 2nd post:
You will be taking the "S Bahn" in Munich from the airport. It is a commuter train that is reached by following the signs in the airport that have a large "S" on them to the lower level of the terminal. There are ticket machines right at the airport as well as a customer service center if you require more assistance.
This video shows you a little more information. https://youtu.be/E4wcErOdjnc?si=JYB4hOw4oyV5EFFO

Carol thank you so much. The youtube was perfect. At least now I have a visual. We were just in Scotland and I totally messed my tickets up purchasing in the machine. So I am hoping to educated myself a bit. I am hoping for 2 nights as well. My husband and I have been to Munich, briefly, but our friends have not. So it is up to them. As we leave and head to Prague to take an Amaway cruise. If you have any other suggestions I would love them. Thank you

With the increases in delays and flight cancelations since COVID, I never plan reserved activities the first day. For my last three international flights, one was delayed by 24 hours ( canceled), one by six hours ( pilot had COVID), and one was on time.
Maybe access Flight Aware for the dependability of your proposed flights.
Good luck!

Pat, thank you. That is why I am hoping to stay for 2 nights. We go in April so hopefully I will get an idea and handle on our plans shortly.

The train connection from airport to downtown is the local aboveground
bahn, not the DB trains.

In addition to regional trains that do go between stations in the Munich (MVV) transport district, there are two kinds of trains run by the district.

There are trains like the New York subways, called U-Bahn (Untergrundbahn). These run shorter distances and, I think, are always underground. Except for a few stations with Garching in their names, the U-Bahn run entirely within the central, M, zone. Because they are smaller, lighter cars, they do not run on the same tracks as the heavier regional trains.

The S-Bahn (Schnellbahn) are like the NYC's Long Island Railway, and run longer distances out into the suburbs, to the outer limits of the MVV, including to the airport. Because the S-Bahn run underground through town, from the Hauptbahnhof to the east station (Ostbahnhof), they are often thought of as subways, but they run above ground, often on the same tracks as regional trains, outside the central downtown area.

The S-Bahn is the only rail link from the airport to downtown, but both the S-Bahn and regional trains go to Dachau Bhf. The regional trains leave from the main shed area of the Munich Hbf; they are faster to Dachau.

The same MVV tickets are valid for all rail transport, the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and regional trains.

I think the video makes it pretty clear, but the Munich Airport Center, between Terminals 1 and 2,
is where the S-Bahn ticketing machines and the escalators downstairs to the trains are. You won't
need to purchase S-Bahn tickets in advance, and trains run every 10 minutes or so. There are 2
lines, S1 and S8, that run from the airport. One more or less goes clockwise and the other counter-
clockwise. The difference in time is not that large, so probably just jump on the first train.

When you get to the ticketing machine, just look for the language setting and switch to English
first before you go any further. There is also a staffed desk during regular hours if all else fails.

As for getting to Dachau, more than likely you will not be the only people trying to get there, so
just follow the crowd. And you will most likely not need to purchase tickets ahead of time, so you
can decide that day if schedules allow the trip.

As Shoeflyer points out, the S-Bahn(s) between the airport and downtown (Hbf to Ost) are so timed that from the airport, whichever S-Bahn is next to leave (S1 or S8), it will get you to any in-town station sooner than waiting for the next S-Bahn. The S-Bahn station at the airport has two tracks on either side of a single platform. Just stand on the platform and go to the side of the platform that has the next train leaving.

The same is basically true for most in-town stations. All but one station has a single platform and the next train to the airport coming through, either an S1 or an S8, will get you to the airport soonest.

The one exception to that rule is the Marienplatz station, which has tracks that go east (S8) to the airport via Leuchtenburgring and tracks that go west (S1) via Laim on different levels. Since the tracks are on different levels, you can't just stand on one platform and take the next train to the airport. But the S1 leaves the station one minute after the S8 leaves. So for 95% of the time (19 min/20 min), the S8 will get you there soonest. Just go down to what's called the first underground level, to Gleis 1, and take the S8.

I believe the in-town stations will show the western route as in the direction of Pasing, even though the train to the airport leaves the trunk line at Laim, one station before Pasing. The other side of the platform probably shows the direction as Ostbahnhof.

From any other in-town station, note that, when the S1 breaks in Neufahrn, the front cars go to Freising, while the rear cars go to the airport. Make sure you get on the correct end of the train. The S8 does not break going to the airport, so there is no such problem with it.

So Thank you all for the information. We have decided to stay 3 nights. That will give us 2 full days in Munich. I think I have a grasp on the Bahn travel from airport. I am now wondering from those of you who have visited what other areas you would suggest to maximize our visit. We are game to see what ever we can ie castles, rivers, churches, the Bavaria region.. Thank you as always.
