Outskirts of Berlin

We will be visiting Berlin for a few days later this month. We are interested in visiting both Sachsenhausen Memorial and Wittenberg. My question is can we visit both these outlying sites on the same day? Can I reach them by taxi or do I need to hire/rent a car?

For the Sachsenhausen Memorial, use google maps to get directions. Then use the city's transport agency to confirm, bvg.de. Google maps recommends taking the sbahn to "S Oranienburg" station and walking about a mile. There may be a taxi area near the station.

For Wittenberg, use bahn.com. Can also use google maps or rome2rio.com for additional info.

I took the train from Berlin and then walked about 20 minutes to Sachsenhausen. It will take you at least 1/2 a day because you will learn as I did (maybe you already know) that when the Soviets "liberated" the camp in 1945, they only freed non-Jewish Soviets. Sachsenhausen indeed was not liberated; it was merely renamed Soviet Special Camp Number 7. The Soviets took over the concentration camp, kept torturing & killing Jewish people, and it didn't shut down until 1950. The Soviets continued the horrors so there is much to see both from the Nazi side and the Soviet side.

For Wittenberg (officially: Lutherstadt Wittenberg) the station »WIttenberg Altstadt« brings you closest to the city centre. Use the above-mentioned website of the Deutsche Bahn for connections. There are considerable price differences between the type of train.
I doubt whether it is a good idea to visit Sachsenhausen and Wittenberg on one day. I would feel myself hurried.
You can possibly use a day-ticket for Berlin Brandenburg for EUR 21, unlimited travel on regional trains (not IC and ICE) and local transport in Berlin (U- and S-Bahn), on weekdays only valid after 09:00.

Hi,

You can take the regional train from Berlin Hbf (central station) to Oranienburg to visit the camp. That regional train has Stralsund as the terminus, at least, that city was the terminus on the train I was on when it stopped at Oranienburg. I was getting off somewhere else.

If you're going to Lutherstadt Wittenberg from Oranienburg, take the regional train back to Berlin Hbf, then change to the ICE train for Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It can done, depending on how early you get to the camp, how long you spend there. On the ICE Lutherstadt Wittenberg is the closest to Berlin Hbf. The next stop after that is Leipzig.
