Options for short Rhine Visit

Just working on the finer details of a spring trip to the area. I have read similar posts so apologies if a little redundant. We have 2 nights in Cochem then 2 nights in Boppard this April. We have Cochem figured out and want to make sure we make the most of what is effectively 1.5 days on the Rhine. We have a rental car.

I have sketched out a couple of different options and am trying to understand if it makes more sense to drive from Mosel area to Boppard via Braubach/Marksberg castle visit or head directly to Boppard and visit Braubach/Marksberg at the end of a cruise/train trip the following day?

Option 1:
Day 1 (Saturday) - Depart Cochem and visit Burg Eltz then drive to Braubach, visit town and Marksburg, then drive to Boppard for evening
Day 2 (Sunday) - train to Bingen/Rudesheim in AM, visit Rudesheim, perhaps do the Assmannhausen tour, then KD cruise to Boppard, spend late afternoon in Boppard (chair lift, etc...) -- can also do in reverse as we are ok with more time on the river
Day 3 (Monday) - depart

Option 2:
Day 1 - Depart Cochem and visit Burg Eltz, drive to Boppard, spend time in Boppard area (chair lift, perhaps cycle to nearby towns, hiking, etc...)
Day 2 - train to Bingen/Rudesheim in AM, KD cruise to St Goar, train to Braubach, visit Braubach and Marksburg, train/ferry back to Boppard
Day 3 - depart

KD schedule question - if I am taking the boat from say Rudesheim to Boppard, according to 2024 schedule I would board in Rudesheim at either 9 or 11 (lets say 9), get off at St Goarhausen at 1045, switch boats and then depart at 1130 or 230 to finish the trip to Boppard? And if I say wanted to spend some time in Oberwesel, I would get off there at 1020, reboard at 1220, then do the switch at St Goarhausen as above?
In terms of trains, is this the right site to be checking out the schedules? https://int.bahn.de/en/

Thanks in advance.

I would do option 1. It will be easier to get to Marksburg with a car. We were there last July and there were no shuttles being offered to the castle, as advertised.

For the boat trip, be aware that it is not a hop on hop off ticket. We wanted to travel from Bacharach, get off at St. Goar for a while, then continue to Boppard. We had to pay for each segment separately.

That is the correct site for train info. Be aware that the train station kiosks may ask for a credit card PIN number. We experienced this in Boppard.

Your time on the Rhine really is too short for all the things you wish to accomplish. I'd go with #1 since the car will minimize the time you spend getting Marksburg and then to Boppard. You can drive onto the ferry south of Braubach in Filsen on Saturday when you head to Boppard.

Day 2: I'd much prefer to stay on that boat that reaches St. Goarshausen (10:45) until it reaches St. Goar (10:50 or so) when it turns around to become a southbound boat. There's a little more to do in St. Goar while you are waiting around. But actually I don't see how you really visit R'heim at all if you board a northbound boat there at 9 am. Suggest you try this plan on for size instead:

  • Train (15 minutes) to Oberwesel (lv 8:15) (free with VRM Guest Ticket)
    (2 hours in Oberwesel)

  • Train to Bingen Rhein Hbf (10:29-10:42) (travel segment not covered by VRM Guest ticket; buy a normal ticket for Oberwesel > Bingen)
Walk across Nahe River bridge to waterfront promenade

  • Bingen-Rüdesheimer foot passenger Ferry (Personenfähre) to Rüdesheim: 11:40
    (4+ hours in Rüdesheim)

  • Catch final K-D boat of the day directly to Boppard (16:15-18:50)

The suggestion for the final boat of the day - the through-boat to Boppard - was made to accommodate sightseeing in Rüdesheim, not because trip interruptions are forbidden, as travel4fun claims in the first post... Hopping off and back on (trip interruptions) are in fact expressly permitted in the rules of transport at the K-D site:

Personal mitteilen

So any passenger who wishes to jump off in Oberwesel, for example, just needs to check with the ship personnel 10 minutes before landing in order to get his/her ticket marked for reboarding.

The trip to Boppard is an "H" fare of €38 - you can see this price on the chart at the bottom of the schedule page. I fail to understand why K-D would force you to buy ticket separately... a G fare (R'heim > St. Goar, €26) plus a C fare (St Goar > Boppard, €16) to do this trip... no matter whether you are using ONE boat for the journey or TWO boats. I suspect that whatever happened in travel4fun's case was an irregularity that should not have happened.

But based on this experience, I think it is wise to clarify with the ticket agent exactly how you intend to take your cruise when making the ticket purchase - and of course to check in with boat personnel prior to hopping off.

We had a car when we visited Marksburg castle. All visits are guided and the only English tour was at 1:30pm. Not sure if that will affect whether you visit it or not.

whether you visit it or not.

Marksburg... Burg Eltz... Reichsburg (Cochem)

All 3 of these castles are the same when it comes to touring - they are accessible by guided tour only.

Two castles - Reichsburg and Marksburg - promise daily English tours at certain hours at their websites...

Reichsburg: 11.30 am, 12.30 pm, 1.30 pm, 2.30 pm, 3.30 pm, 4.30 pm
Marksburg: 1 and 4 pm

The Burg Eltz site does not promise scheduled tours in English at all - only a flyer with the tour text in English that you take with you on the German tour (something that Reichsburg and Marksburg also promise.)

If a tour in spoken English is important, you should not rely on the schedules you see on the websites - especially in APRIL, when visitor numbers are lower and highly variable. In the real world, tours in English depend on conditions on the ground on that particular day, and website information is unreliable. Your best bet for accurate information is to contact the castle directly shortly before your visit.

Just a note that at Marksburg castle you can join any tour, if it isn't in English you get a handout that explains things. The only part I felt I missed out on was the guide's jokes. Also there is this note on the castle's web page:

Concerning guided tours in English at other times of the day, please
call our visitor service: +49-2627-206 as you might be able to join a
pre-booked English-speaking group.

Thanks all for the quick and thorough responses - this forum is amazing. We will do the car to Marksburg on Day 1 as recommended and Russ, I like your approach better for Day 2. We could also do a stop at another Rhine town as we leave the area on Day 3.

Another question that I am sure there is no right answer too :-) Given a short amount of time, staying in Boppard and a a cruise needs to be included, what are the top couple of towns to prioritize to spend a little time in if we have never been in the area before? I defaulted to Rudesheim & Oberwesel but open to other places. We will have done castles at Berg Eltz and Marksburg, so we our interest is trying to have an experience, for example, another way to look at this might be "you must eat the schnitzel (or other local delicacy at this place in town yyyy", or have some local wines at this winegarten (I hope I am getting that right), or have a beer on this patio with an incredible view, ....

Take the Boppard chairlift, walk a short distance to "Gedeonseck"...

While in the very attractive old-world town of Braubach for Marksburg Castle, it's a no-brainer to visit the small old-town zone and the Marktplatz where you'll find "Zum Goldenen Schlüssel" - I've dined there a couple of times and enjoyed the traditional food (including the Schnitzel.) There are outdoor tables on the square as well as indoor dining.

Rüdesheim and Oberwesel:

Most people find R'heim entertaining on a variety of levels. I'd keep it.

Oberwesel is great if you want to take a fairly easy hike around the old town wall. Otherwise, there are some nice buildings in town including the Liebfrauenkirche.

If you only have a short amount of time, an additional town - perhaps a substiture for Oberwesel - is Bacharach. You can walk through some very attractive half-timbered buildings there in half an hour or so if that's all you've got.
