Opinions on Freiburg or Strasbourg as a base for day trips?

We’re starting out our summer travel in Munich and then a few days in Salzburg. I was pretty close to booking a hotel in Bolzano as the next stop, but now think it would be too much of a detour (but if someone thinks it’s doable, would love to hear it).

So now from Salzburg we’re thinking of heading to either Strasbourg or Freiburg and doing some day trips to Zurich or Basel, areas near Strasbourg. We’re not necessarily looking to visit Black Forest towns.

After this, we’ll head to the Rhine area (haven’t figured this out yet), and then to Frankfurt to see some family.

Day 1: Arrive Munich
Day 2: Munich to Neuchwanstein
Day 3: Salzburg
Day 4: Salzburg
Day 5: Salzburg
Day 6: Head to Strasbourg or Frieburg
Day 7-8/9 stay in this region and do day trips
Day 10: Rhine area

Interests are cities, fun things for kids, castles, scenery.

Thank you for your thoughts!

Last September we stayed in Freiburg and used it as our base for numerous day trips to Staufen, Colmar, Basel and Strasbourg
. It was so convenient and our time in Freiburg was enjoyable because of their easy to use public transportation even though we had a rental car. We have used Strasbourg as our base several years ago and it was really nice also but the train stations weren't
as convenient. Have a great time.

There's a big difference between the Black Forest and Alsace. Which would you prefer? You do not say if you will have a rental car.

Many Black Forest visitors like to take one-way forest hikes, which depends on the free KONUS card offered by most hotels. But hotels in a few specific locations, like Freiburg, don't participate in this plan.

Thank you for the thoughts! We may not go into the Black Forest at all as we just have a few days and want to visit Zurich, Strasbourg and possibly one other day trip (there was a castle that looked interesting near Strasbourg). I did learn from other posts that Freiburg does not participate in the KONUS program, but figured it’s okay if we were not planning to see BF sights. Perhaps it would be a miss if we’re so close, that’s something to consider as well.

Oh, no rental car yet but it’s not definite. We’ve never driven in Europe and not sure how to coordinate logistics given that we want to pop across borders and there may be special stickers/permits etc required for each country … I don’t know if worth the effort? I haven’t, however, compared the cost of train travel for 4 against a rental car.

The black forest open air museum is really enjoyable for kids and adults and can be reached fairly easily from Freiburg. I think overall the black forest has more interesting things for kids than Alsace.

On the Rhine my kids really enjoy exploring the tunnels under Rheinfells Castle in St Goar.

Stay in Freiburg or Breisach and take the bus/train into Colmar/Strasbourg. You don't want to deal with parking there, it can run 50 Euro/day. Plus you need the correct pollution sticker on your car or risk a fine.

If you're not especially interested in the Black Forest (which I can understand) take a good look at Lake Konstanz. Mainau is fantastic, the Urwelt Museum is great if you're into dinosaurs, and Rhine Falls is worth visiting.

I should have given more notice to this OP sentence:

we’re thinking of heading to either Strasbourg or Freiburg and doing some day trips to Zurich or Basel, areas near Strasbourg. We’re not necessarily looking to visit Black Forest towns.

As someone who drove to the BF from Zurich, this does not make good sense. It's a two hour drive, and the train is almost as long. Why are you "going to the BF" if you don't want to visit some BF towns, or walk in the BF? I can make a guess that you've heard how expensive Switzerland is, but why drive all the way to the BF if it's not "near" Basel. It's easier to be sure you have a Swiss highway vignette if you rent the car in Switzerland. It's a six hour drive from Salzburg to Feiburg. That seems a bad use of limited vacation time.

I did enjoy my drive, and stopped at several interesting places, among them the Vitra Design Campus, Augusta Raurica, Aarau, and Stein am Rhine, as well as visiting the Fondation Beyeler, I guess Basel's museum closest to Germany.

On another trip, we took the train from CDG to Strasbourg, where after two or three nights, we rented a car to spend a week in Alsace. It was too much extra driving, but we wanted to end up in Avignon, where we returned the car before going back to Paris on the TGV However, I do not consider Strasbourg to be close to Zurich or even Basel. While Google Maps is not a very good time estimator, you may wish to do some mileage and rough time-study about your planned trip.

I have NOT been to Neuschwanstein, but you may wish to use the Search box for this newsboard, top center. Some posters find its construction date and interior make it a second-rate castle. There are castles in Alsace, but maybe not as many as the scenic Middle Rhine.

Edit: The Search box will also reveal explicit instructions for the Middle Rhine.

You don't give the childrens' age, but if they haven't seen The Sound Of Music, or learned about Mozart, three days in Salzburg may be too much. It's a pretty place, but who wants to sit on a bus for The Sound Of Music tour? It might be better to allocate some of that time to the Middle Rhine, where they can walk through actual castles, and view them from the KD boat, while eating a sausage (if they won't refuse something other than a bland hot dog!)

Tim just uttered my thoughts! Strasbourg > Zurich makes no sense as a day trip as it's 5 hours round trip by train.

The other problem here is Day 6. Salzburg > Strasbourg is 6.5 - 8 hours for your morning departures from Salzburg. Freiburg is only slightly better. Then you have 2+ hours to reach Frankfurt on Day 10. More reasonable, but it doesn't rescue Day 6.

Interests are cities, fun things for kids, castles, scenery.

You do not have to make the Evil-Knievel-like leap from Austria all the way across Germany to France for this. I have no hesitations recommending instead that you make Nuremberg your 3-night base town.

Day 6: Salzburg > Nuremberg 9:00 - 11:54 by train

Nuremberg has a very nice old-town zone that's perfect for pedestrians...

Walking tour of Nuremberg: Scroll down roughly half way on this long page. There's a guide for exploring Nuremberg on foot there:

Options for kids in Nuremberg:

Kaiserburg Castle
DB Railway Museum
Toy Museum
Craftsmen's Courtyard (Handwerkerhof)
Merks Auto Museum
Zoo

DOABLE day trips by train from Nuremberg include...

Franconian Open Air Museum (Bad Windsheim)
Bamberg
Rothenburg
Iphofen
Würzburg

DAY 10: Nuremberg > Frankfurt 8:58 - 11:04 by train

Another vote for Strasbourg.

Freiburg is a really nice university town, but there’s not a lot to do. Strasbourg will be more interesting and convenient

Bolzano isn’t crazy. Neither would Romantic Road or, if it were me, I’d spend 4 days in the Berchtesgadener area hiking, salt mine, nazi sites, gondola rides.

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback.

  • Interesting to read that there may be too many days planned for Salzburg. I was feeling like I didn’t allot enough days for the Rhine Valley, so maybe I’ll do some swapping.

  • Neuschwanstein is a place the kids want to visit, so want to make time for it.

  • I did note the distance from Salzburg to the BF area but not sure how to get around it. We have visited places in Switzerland before and am not opposed to staying there, but it seems more flexible geographically to stay in the BF area in order to take the day trips I mentioned. I like the idea of the open air museum so may give that a visit.

Thanks again for the advice as I continue refining the itinerary.

You could take the Arlberg Rail line from Salzburg over to Zurich, and break your travel there (or not), and continue on to Basel or Freiburg or Colmar.
