open-ended flights

Can someone explain to me what open-ended flights are? Am I correct in assuming that, for example, a one-way ticket to Berlin will be MORE than half of a round-trip ticket? Want to go to Berlin, fly to A'dam and home from there. Thanks!

Look for the multi city option on the airlines website.

Just FYI, there is also a "double open jaws ticket", where your original location and final destination are also different. An example would be to fly from Seattle to Paris, then return from Rome to LA. Not sure if all airlines can handle this through their "multi-city" system.

Following up on MrsEB's suggestion to buy intra-European flights separately, this works well IF your initial destination is one where you want to spend some time. That way, you can book your intra-European flight(s) for a few days later and avoid the worry that your trans-Atlantic flight is delayed and your second ticket becomes worthless.

But don't forget trains, which can take you from city center to city center quickly and cheaply (6 hours Berlin to Amsterdam, €38 which includes all the luggage you can carry)
