Only a month till the big trip.

Okay so all of a sudden the time is passing quickly and I feel like I need to be sure we have everything in order.

My itinerary

Fly into Munich on Saturday midday, get car drive to Hotel, check in, and possibly do a nice meal then off to bed early.

Sunday free for site seeing and dinner at Hofbrau house.

Monday leave after leisurely breakfast for a slow drive to Ga-Pa. stopping where something of interest hits our fancy. Mon/tues/weds in Ga-Pa to take in the area. Visit Mittenwald, the Zugspitze, dinner at traditional Bavarian place.

Leave Thursday for drive to Salzburg.

Thursday -Monday in Salzburg with a few planned visits (mozarts birthplace, Mirabelle gardens, eagles nest).

Flights are booked, hotels are booked, car is rented.

What should we not miss in each area? Fav places to dine? Places to relax and enjoy the scenery? We aren't planning a lot on each day and will do what time and energy allow for. Pop is 81 so he will need his day off to read and relax a bit. I think our travel plans allow for this.

Any opinions?

The only comment I have is on your car rental. Why are you picking it up at the airport if you're staying in Munich for 2 nights? Driving in Munich isn't easy, and neither is parking. Does your hotel have parking? Public transportation in Munich is excellent, including from the airport. I'd recommend that you not pick up the car until you leave the city.

On your way, or during your stay in GaPa , I'd recommend stopping in Oberammergau, the Ettal Monastery, and Linderhof.

Don't forget that you'll need to buy a vignette sticker for the car for your stay in Austria.

Thanks for the ideas on where to stop on the way to GA-PA.

In Munich our hotel does have parking, we chose to rent a car as we are traveling with our Dad who is 80 and will be exhausted after the flights. We thought this way he doesn't have to drag his luggage to the train, onto the train and off the train etc. We realize the car won't move while we spend the time in Munich but thought it would be easier to obtain at the airport as we have to drive back to the Munich airport from Salzburg on Monday for our flight (the following week), and we wanted to return the car there to simplify the process. Bad idea? Thoughts?
