Hi. My husband and I are coming to Europe and spending two weeks in Switzerland and then taking the train to Munich (where we will be leaving from to come back to the states). We have a week to spend in the Bavaria area. I know it's not enough to see everything, but what do you recommend not missing? Is there a good place to have as a home base so we don't have to switch hotel rooms too many times? Is it better to rent a car or use the train?

Given your schedule, I would probably choose to base myself in Munich. From there you can explore the city, but also take day trips to places like Dachau, Nuremberg or Regensburg. Even Salzburg is only about an hour and a half away by train. And the train would definitely be better, especially if you stay in or around Munich. You would not want a car in the city.

If you are going to make side trips from Munich, you might want to research Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Oberammergau. Both are just a short way southwest of Munich and are lovely places to visit.
