One night in Munich- Which beer hall for atmosphere and dinner?

Munich is just a pass though city for us (we are spending the night near the Train station) but my wife and I would like to experience one of the beer halls, but we're not sure which one to go for

Here's the specifics:
May 18th, monday night
My wife and Don't drink, but we aren't against trying something for the experience
We LOVE bratwurst
We are both musicians and brass players (trumpet and tuba) and would like to enjoy some good old oom-paa playing
we are staying closest to Augustiner Bräustuben, but it doesn't look like a very interesting neighborhood. Maybe it changes at night?

Augustiner Brauestuben is where I'd point anyone for a good meal and atmosphere but you're not going to get "oompah" music there on a Monday (or aside from special days probably). Go for the authentic atmosphere and good food - the best pork knuckle I've had to this day.

If you want the brass, go have a non-alcoholic beverage at Hofbrau which is the only place you're likely to see a band playing that kind of music (which is just honestly for the tourists ) on a Monday.

thanks Sarah. I know it's a tourist thing, but As a professional tuba player, I want to experience real oompaa music (hell, I want to sit in with the band).

we'll try the Hofbrau. Probably going to take public transportation, might be a little bit of a long walk from where we are staying (Wyndham H+)

Sarah has the same answers, for the same reasons, that I was to write.

Hi 4- Take your trumpet with you and they might let you play with them - Friend of mine took his on a trip to Japan where he broke it out on a bullet train and also played with a jazz ensemble at a major hotel (no advertising rule?) in Honolulu where we stayed overnight...

Have a great trip !!!

PS- food at the Hofbrau house isn't that great...

There are several Augustiner Beer Halls in Munich. I prefer the one by the Hunting Museum. For better food try the Kaisergarten which is up in the University district north of the museums. The Hofbrau Haus is pretty touristy; the food is average at best, but they do usually have a band. The Spaten Haus (across from the Opera) is pretty good too. Lowenbrau often has music.

One thing about Munich is that due to the number of music students there's always a number of good buskers playing in the streets.

In the square? I couldn't say. There's usually 2-3 sets on nice evenings spaced out along the main shopping street that leads to Marinplatz. That's when the weather's warm enough for the main business to be sitting outside on the tables instead of inside. I've heard everything from Blues/Jazz to Classical with singles and trios; you never know. Strangest was American Country Western (in German) sung (with backing) by a Hawaiian. He had a good audience...

Look for Jazz Cellars, they always have somebody playing sometime. Schedules, like menu's, usually get posted outside.

My experience is that street musicians are pretty common in Europe.

If the weather is beer-garden good you could start at the Augustinerkeller where they have a traditional brass band in the beer garden on Mondays. Then, go to the famous Hofbräuhaus, which has music on all days except Good Friday.
