Taking a Christmas markets river cruise from Passau to Budapest. Cruise has first night in Passau. Flying into Munich the day before embarkation. Wondering if we should spend the night in Munich to see their Christmas market or head straight for Passau. Appreciate your recommendations/insights! Thank you!

We ave visited both in Advent Season.
If you have multiple days to learn the metro system and visit the various markets, Munich can be a nice stop.
With only the single day I would go to Passau. It is a very attractive town, with beautiful river walks and nice community Christmas Market. Everything is reachable on foot.

How you plan to get to Passau is a major concern. It can be a 3+ drive in December, depending on the weather. It's 4+ hours by train. I'd probably want to get there ASAP to be covered for the departure.
Munich's Christmas markets are scattered all over. I like Munich at that time of year but wouldn't make the markets a major focus of the day. Just walking the shopping areas in the old town is usually enough. There's usually street music and window dressings, but the snack stands. and a good warm cellar to stop in.

It's 4+ hours by train.
The hourly RE 3 minute 24 after the hour) needs 2:13 - 2:15. It's not much faster by car.
