one night in Munich - hotel suggestions

We are arriving in Munich by train from Paris at 930 PM and will be heading out to Fussen the next day. We hope to see a bit of Marianplatz before leaving mid afternoon. Our 22 year old daughter will be with us. We are looking for a safe hotel. My husband is a bit worried about the hotels near the train station. Do you have a suggestion for us?

Pension Lindner is a short walk from Marienplatz and Viktulienmarkt, just off the newly-pedestrianized section of Sendlingerstraße. It's directly across the street from the Munich City Museum and the Jewish Museum and synagogue; Asamkirche is just around the corner.

It isn't fancy, but it is clean, comfortable and a good value, and there is an ample breakfast in the morning.

When you write for a reservation, Frau Sinzinger is quick to mention that there is a big construction project next door with some noise during the day. But at night it's forest-like quiet, with no city noise at all.

I was on the 14 day Best of Europe RS tour last year and we stayed at a very nice hotel called Hotel Blauer Bock. Wonderful location in walking distance of Marianplatz and right across the street is the Viktualienmarkt and it had a wonderful breakfast. Clean, very nice hotel which I would stay there again if I was in Munich. It may be a perfect place to stay so that you get up in the morning, see the sights and the clock, be right in the center of town and have the hotel call you a cab to get you back to the train station. You don't want to stay out to far the the center of town if you want to see a few things in the morning. Have a great time. Check the RS germany book in the Munich section to see what hotels he recommends then look on the map to see where they are located.

Have a look at the reviews on the Creatif Hotel Elephant– it’s about a 250m walk, less than 5 minutes from the train station.

It’s clean &reasonably priced – certainly not 5 stars but a good basic hotel.

sandi,

I normally use Hotel Royal which is close to the main station. The surrounding neighborhood is a bit "colourful" but I don't have a problem with that, as the hotel is wonderful (they serve a great breakfast). It's an easy walk to Marienplatz and the Viktualien Market area (maybe 10 minutes).

I stayed one night at the Hotel Europaischer Hof (reviews here) - directly across from train station. Yes the neighborhood is colorful but I felt totally safe as a solo female. Basic hotel, good breakfast, and it's an easy walk to the main sights and very convenient to the train. I got a decent deal booking ahead (click on "best buy" icon when you search for reservations). Not sure what their luggage hold policy is (since you won't be leaving until mid-afternoon), so you may need to investigate that.

Would we need a taxi from the train station to get to this hotel [Pension Lindner]?

No. At the train station go downstairs to take the S8 commuter train in the direction of the airport ("Richtung Flughafen") two stops to Marienplatz. From there it's a five-minute walk to the hotel.

Walking from the Hauptbahnhof to the hotel would take about 15 minutes.

Hi,

In your case arriving at 21:30 at Munich Hbf, which I've done at 2200 to 2300, I would go down the stairs through the underground passage to the Dachauer Strasse exit, take the stairs, once out Pension Locarno is at the corner. From the Hbf to the Pension you're going through the underground passage, no need to go to street level. At departure even better, since the stair way is literally a few steps from the Pension's front door, using the underground passage in accessing the station

If you want more luxury, (twice as much as the Pension), I suggest also Europäsischer Hof, just opposite the station on Bayerstrasse, can't go wrong with these places at Munich Hbf.
