One night in Gengenbach?

Have found ourselves with one, possibly two nights leftover to fill while in Germany.
Considering a night in Gengenbach- would drive there from Rothenburg area then from Gengenbach to Fussen/Garmisch.

We easily have 1 night available and I could rearrange later in trip to give the BF area 2 nights if needed.
Is the drive from Rothenburg to Gengenbach easy enough? which route would you suggest? Would prefer to not backtrack too much as we will have already driven from Heidelberg to Rothenburg.

We would enjoy the Open Air Museum in Gutach, cuckoo clock stuff in Furtwagen- wonder if just going to Gengenbach for 1 night then heading out next day with stops at those sights on our way to Fussen would be too much in one day? Is that an easy enough drive? How long to allow for Open Air Museum?

Thanks

Gengenbach is an unreasonable detour off your route with so little time.

I suggest instead that you visit the Franconian Open-Land Museum in the attractive town of Bad Windsheim instead. It's excellent. Weissenburg and Pappenheim are attractive towns south of there that you might visit as well on your way to Füssen. You will find these places relatively free of the tourist swarm in Rothenburg and Füssen.

Thanks Russ- that is what I thought.
Would staying 2 nights in Gengenbach make it more worthwhile/reasonable?
Right now I have 4 nights slotted for Fussen/Garmisch area and not sure we need 4 there. 3 would be adequate?

3 sounds good for G-P and Fü. 2 nights in G'bach would work better and you'd have time for the Vogtsbauernhof and to visit a village or two. With 3 nights there I might add a day trip to Freiburg or to Strasbourg (FR.)

You can check your long drive times to and from G'bach at www.viamichelin.com for that detour. OTOH the Franconian Open-Land museum is really good - I liked it more than the Vogtsbauernhof - and it and the towns I mentioned are quite nice as well and all basically on your route south. Depends on how much driving you wish to do I guess.

My husband and I stayed in Gengenbach for 5 nights. Lovely town and great base for taking train to Colmar, Strasbourg, and other small towns for free. We also had a car and visited the Vogtsbauernhof museum. When we arrived there they told us it would take about 3 hours to go through all the farmhouse exhibits. My husband could have stayed literally all day. Very educational.

"We also had a car and visited the Vogtsbauernhof museum."

A car is not necessary to visit the Vogsbauernhof museum. There are regional trains leaving Gengenbach hourly. Most connect in Hausach to a bus to the museum. Occasionally you use a different change point or two buses. The trip takes less than an hour. You can find the schedules on the German Rail schedule website.

When you stay in the Black Forest and pay the kurtax, you get a Konus Karte which gives you free access to buses and trains in the area. Going to the museum from Gengenbach using public transportation will cost you nothing.

Gengenbach is also accessible from Offenburg on the Rhein or from Donaueschingen or Konstanz.

There is now a train that stops right at the Voghtsbauernhof. Also fun is the alpine coaster next door.

Just wanted to update and thank everyone for the advice/suggestions.
We have decided to skip a side trip to BF- too much/too far.
I will just save all the tips and my research and be sure to include that area in our next trip to Germany.
