One night Bregenz or Lindau?

Does your trip take you through Bregenz, then Lindau, on the way to Augsburg.

If not, then I would go to the town that doesn't take you out of the way.

I've spent lots of time in Lindau, including a 3 night stay last year, but just one afternoon in Bregenz, last year. Overall, I think Lindau is more scenic, but Bregenz does have the Pfänderbahn, which gives you a great panoramic view of Bodensee.

I have stayed in Lindau and enjoyed it very much. Never been toBregenz.'

Bregenz is not one of those delightful romantic cities of which there are so many in Austria, while Lindau is a pretty old town on an island (and to enjoy that, your hotel would have to be on the island too). On the other hand, both towns are only separated by a very short S-Bahn ride, so it does not really matter where you stay - you can see both of them and in both there are also hotels right by the train station.

BTW, If you are traveling by train: check the timetable Lindau - Augsburg shortly before travelling (www.bahn.com). There are many construction works on that line and there could be timetable changes on short notice.

Note that Bregenz has an unusual, seasonal, opera/theater festival on a huge stage set on surface of the lake. There's a long scene there in the James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.
