One more try-Day trip to Bavarian Alps/Countryside

I am probably working too hard at this, but just cannot decide how to arrange our one day trip out of Munich. I wish we had planned the trip differently, but here I am. I really picked Munich with the idea that I would visit the Alps for a small bit.

I am deciding between taking the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and renting a car to provide flexibility: I might want to go south to Mittenwald, or go up to the top of the mountains, or go to Linderhoff and Ettal, maybe do an alpine coaster. Any of these would make us happy and there are o many choices! Obviously all these are not possible, and I will have to chose. The appeal of Oberammergau is the small town and painted houses, and the gardens at Linderhoff, nearby. I need to pick the car up in GP(not possible in Oberammergau) and can drop it off after hours the same day, giving us a full day. Public transportation is possible, but less flexible.

Or

Should we take the train to Fussen and see the OUTSIDE of Neuschwanstein( we are happy to skip the inside) and actually tour Hohenschwangau. Then have a time to maybe do the treetop walk, or enjoy time near the lake. I probably would use public transportation rather than a car. The appeal would be maybe more sense of the Alps without driving and less running around. BUT, more crowded?

Our goal: See beautiful countryside and experience a bit of the Alps. We are ready for a long day. Cost is not a driver. We will be touring one of the Palaces in Munich and Sanssoucci in Potsdam, so we will have palace time on other parts of the trip.

On limited time, Linderhoff is where I would go, it's just what I always wanted, an nice one bedroom getaway in the mountains The gardens are nice but it is worth the effort to get an English tour of the castle itself. The interior is beautiful and has some of the most exquisite Meisen porcelain works you will ever see. It was Ludwig's favorite place.

You may be trying to do too much and your plans are somewhat internally contradictory-- you want to see the Alps, but will spend most of your day indoors. The weather may make the choice for you. try to have some flexibility as to what day you do this.

For Alps, the Zugspitz is tops, but it may take half a day. The Wendelstein is almost as good, probably less crowded, half the price , and less time consuming

Garmisch over Fussen any day. But why get a car? There are a number of local tours you can take from there that will save you the hassle of getting a rental and turning it in (which will kill a couple hours of your day). Personally I think if you go up the Zugspitz (provided the weather is clear) that will be half a day gone, and there's plenty to do in town (Partnachlamm) to fill the rest of the time before you go back to Munich.

Likewise, it you want to get deeper into the mountains and ride through some great scenery you could take the train to Innsbruck for the day. But I'd just plan on Garmish and pray for clear skies.

Hi. One thing that really helps me is to remember to lessen the agitation of travel when I find myself overwhelmed with choices. I am travelling to have fun, though I suppose not everyone is. I would pick the Garmisch option or possibly Mittenwald. Both have scenic mountain visits to explore. Both are a simple train ride from Munich that all can enjoy (meaning with the renting of a car, someone is going to be focused on driving and not seeing the scenery). Actually, both G & M are on the same scenic ride from Munich. Check out the info from the man in seat 61. Go to the section about 1/2 way down the page on Munich to Innsbruck. Read option 2: the slower but much more scenic route.

I think Russ gave you some good links on one of your earlier posts. Maybe revisit them? BTW, when I go to the Linderhof website, I see there is some construction going on.

My 2 cents.

I am going to Bavaria/one day trip on August 14. I have a tiny bit of flexibility, but was trying to avoid August 15th because it is a national holiday.

There is a lot of good feedback here. The consensus is to stay in the Oberammergau, GP, Mittenwald corridor. I hadn't thought of seeing is I could find a tour right out of that area, or go on to Innisbruck. All suggestions to explore. I will read any other posts.

I'm no expert on public transport but I believe the cheap rail fares start at 9:00am midweek. Königssee/Mount Jenner is the best spot for me, though it may take some time getting there.

Mittenwald is a lovely little place. To get amongst nature, fairly easy hikes to Leutasch Gorge or to Lautersee onto Ferchensee. I'm not fussed so much with GP as a town but Eibsee, Partnachklamm, and especially Höllentalklamm, are worth the effort.
I like Füssen, which can take up a full day with the town itself, a walk along the river, up to Hohenschawangau, the castles, museum and Alpsee.

I'm not too fond of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. To me it is too big to be quaint. And the Zugspitze, although the highest mountain in Germany, is not a very high mountain. Heck, the parking lot of the area at which I used to ski is higher than the top of the Zugspitze.

In my opinion, if you want a real alpine experience, go to Oberstdorf at the head of the Iller valley in the Oberallgäu. There is a direct train leaving Munich Hbf at 9:19 in the morning (so you can use a Bayern-Ticket). It takes 2H21, just a half hour longer than to Mittenwald.

Oberstdorf is a quaint little alpine town that looks naturally like Vail was built to look like, and it's surrounded by mountains. From Oberstdorf a bus runs up into the high alpine valley of Kleinwalsertal, a part of the Austrian Tirol.
