One Day Rhine

Guten tag! We are a family of 4 (older kids) traveling to Germany for the first time to celebrate graduations. We have one day to spend in the Rhine valley and I am totally overwhelmed/confused as to what we should do!
Here is our itinerary so far:
Leaving Nurburg in the morning to travel by car to Rhine valley
Explore Rhine valley that day
Stay in Rhine valley that night (currently have a reservation in Rudesheim but can change)
Leave for Stuttgart next morning

My questions are:
Where is the best place to stay to maximize time (something very nice)?
We need to take the boats north correct?
Starting from what city and ending at what city on the boat is our best option?
Where should we get off the boat to do things?
How do we incorporate using the train?
What are the must-see things for our one day?

Thank you for helping to make our trip special!

Since you will be staying in Rudesheim, start the boat ride there. Take it to St. Goar and visit Burg Rheinfels. Take the ferry across the Rhine and the train back to Rudesheim. Or you could take the train to Bingen and then ferry there to Rudesheim. If you have time, you could take the cable car up to the monument at Rudesheim.

The most scenic part of the Rhine river is from Bingen or Rüdesheim to St. Goar. The town of Bacharach is another great base for the Rhine River. You can train to Bingen and then cruise to St Goar and then train back to Bacharach. I find St. Goar the best logistically-speaking. Rheinfels, one of the two top Rhine castle visits, is right in town. Marksburg in Braubach, the other top castle visit, is easily reached by using the St. Goar ferry to cross the Rhine, then the train to Braubach (22 min.) St. Goar is geographically central for visiting the other 3 west-bank towns by train. Since you will be based in Rüdesheim, take the train to Bingen in the and board the cruise there to St.Goar. After the cruise, take the train back.
