Oktoberfest for 2 people

My husband and I are going to be in a Munich for a few days in late September and one of the things we want to experience is Oktoberfest. We plan to go on a Thursday or Friday (thus avoiding the complete chaos of a weekend), but everything we've read seems to indicate that you can't make reservations for less than a full table.

Will it be obvious what tables are reserved/not reserved within the tents? The last thing we want to do is make a misstep there. We are fine to go early, as we plan to pace ourselves and enjoy the day.

Any other tips in terms of favorite tents and/or food that we should check out while we are there?

My husband and I were there in late Sept. 2015 and had a ball! You will have no trouble if you go in the early to mid-afternoon. It's very obvious what's reserved and not hard to grab a seat at a communal table. We enjoyed the delicious roasted chicken and beer in the Lowenbrau tent but enjoyed the festivities in several tents. You can't go wrong--just wander in and out of several and grab a seat. It's a blast!

@tchef1 Thank you! That helps put me at ease...we're pretty nimble when we travel, but I would hate to think there was something that we could have done in advance to better prepare for such a crowded event!

Do you have a room reservation? Rooms are from 3-4 times higher during Octoberfest., otherwise stay outside Munich and train in. You can go in and find a table in the early afternoon, but they may send you out before 6 o'clock in deference to people with reservations. We had a great time in the Hof Brau tent, but they all seem to be good. We went on a Wednesday and there was a huge crowd. I think everyday is crowded.

Reserved tables will have cards on them showing the reservation time, and you are free to sit there until that time. Mostly its corporate type functions entertaining customers, suppliers, employees and the like. You can ask the organizer when they show up if you can stay a little longer if everyone doesn't show up exactly on time, which they never do. We did that, saying we were ready to leave whenever she said to go, and she said not to worry and she'd tell us when it was time to clear out. Then you are likely to find a table with a couple of empty seats and you should make friends quickly. Its that kind of party.

@hank Yes, we actually booked our hotel before we booked our flights (haha!) and while the price was a little elevated it wasn't too bad b/c it's in the English Garden district (i.e. not the Marienplatz)---BUT it's right off the U3/U6 line which is a straight shot to the Oktoberfest grounds. We'll be in Munich for 5 days/nights so luckily we've got some flexibility with our plans and "itinerary" if you will.

@sam Thank you for the insight as well!
