Oktoberfest - Book seats for the Beer Tents

Hello, We are traveling with another couple to Munich October 2,3, and 4th and was wondering do we have to book seats for the beer tents. Book seats, not book seats or take our chances. Any feedback would be appreciated.

If you can book seats, i would - only because then you are certain you will get in and have a place.
That said, Dad and I went 2 years ago and were not able to book seats. We were able to get into several tents . It took a while, but a very nice table squeezed us in and we had a great time. (That was a Saturday evening) The next day, we went on Sunday afternoon to evening and were able to get into some of the smaller tents easily. No seats but we were able to stand. Some tents will only serve you if seated.
it was a lot of fun. Take time to look at the stalls as well. We had fish on a stick - it was great!

You can only book a table for 10 people, with a guarantee of 10 liters of beer and 10 half chickens.

You'll be there midweek and during the afternoon, you will have no trouble finding seats. The reserved tables will have placards on them indicating when the reservation begins, usually around 5 pm, and you can sit there until that time, Afterward, you will wander around and see if you sit with others. People are pretty friendly after a couple of masses of beer, and they are from all over the world, even from Munich.

No, reservations are not needed. We've been in mid afternoon and had no problem at all getting into any of the tents. Early to mid afternoon on any of the days you'll be there should not be crowded at all, On any day it will get very crowded at night.

To reiterate what everyone has said - you have to have a minimum of 10 people to reserve a spot. And only then can you reserve a window of time.
Assuming you have less than 10 people - do not fret. First tip, go midweek if you can. The weekends can be packed from start to finish. If you must go on a weekend...get there at the start. Every tent has non-reservation tables - first come, first served. If you get a spot, you have it for as long as you like. If all else fails, put your BEST charm on. I cannot tell you how many gracious friendly people have "scooted down" to make room for us on a crowded table. A kind smile and friendly attitude goes a long way. The people we have met doing this are half of the experience.
My last tip, dress up! Get lederhosen and a dirndl. You won't be sorry.

I agree with the others that you should not have a problem mid-week and earlier in the day.

I also agree that it really adds to the experience to dress up! You can find outfits in Munich that range from very authentic and expensive to cheaper costume versions. We found a cheaper costume version at the Lidl store on Schwanthalerstrasse near the Courtyard Marriott Munich City Center which is near the main train station. We went closer to the end of the fest (like you!) and so the outfits were on sale for half price. Have fun!
