We will be at the first day of Oktoberfest (September 17th). We have sent letters and reservations online and have had no luck to this point. Any inside track or advice as to how to get a table that day. We have a party of 10.
It's a little early to secure reservation but opening day tent reservations are a little like season tickets for popular sports teams, people who had reservations in previous years get preference over newcomers.
One option to secure reservations is to re-purchase them through independent travel agents who specialize in Oktoberfest. They will try and sell you on booking the whole trip through them but in my experience most end up with an extra table or two they are willing to resell for a profit as you get closer to Oktoberfest. This is what the group I travel to Oktoberfest always does. We have a few different agents we work with.
Another option is to check the forums at toytowngermany.com. Every year there is a thread to connect buyers/sellers of tent reservations.
As long as you are not picky as to the tent and willing to pay 70-100€ per person you should be able to get a table reservation for opening day.

You need to reserve at individual tents. I just looked at the Augustiner tent:

The message is that they will start taking reservations in March.
Thanks for the replies.
DJ - are there agencies you would recommend if I can ask?
I've gotten tables from Sara at Whitney-Events in the past by contacting her through the ToyTown forums. Here is her thread for reservations from 2015:

If you do book with her keep in mind she has a strict cancellation policy where you pay if you back out of the contract and she can't resell you reservation.
