Hi
We will be in Munich for Octoberfest by coincidence. If I can get a hotel in Munich, what would be the best area to saty(Dad wants to visit the beer tenst). If I cant, where can we stay that is easy to travel into Munich.
Thanks

Outside of Munich you might consider Augsburg a 30-45 minute train trip. What I saw that was interesting in a Munich day trip post, was taking the S-Bahn to Herrsching and visiting the Ammersee and Kloister Andechs, so maybe Herrsching?

Hi Diane- It's pretty late to be getting a hotel in Munich for this year's Oktoberfest but there are some expensive ones left. The questions are
How much can you afford? (Some of the less expensive rooms are non-refundable.) What are your exact dates? (Rooms on Fri-Sat-Sun,& Mon are not as plentiful and as a result are more expensive.) If you stay in Munich how close do you need to be to the Oktoberfest location (Theresienwiese)? (The Munich public transportation system is world class so it isn't really necessary to stay close to the train station.) Will you have a car? (Some of the less expensive hotels do not have any parking.) And if you do have a car and stay in Munich, park it and ride the wonderful public transportation system.

I just checked Booking.com and they have some rooms available that are close to the main Munich train station (Hauptbahnhof) which is also close to the Theresienwiese. Some are non-refundable. Some do not have elevators. Some allow smoking. Most have breakfast included in the rate.

I have stayed in Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Garmisch, and Freising and commuted to the Oktoberfest by train. There are many other villages and towns less than 50 miles from Munich that have good rail connections. If you stay outside of Munich try to get a room close to the train station in that town so it will be easy to get to and from the train station. (I believe Bad Tolz does not meet this criteria.)

If you need more help just ask. You can get a lot of tips from this website

Forget booking something in Munich this close to Oktoberfest unless money is no object. Most of the reasonable accommodations are booked by December.

There should be plenty of reasonable rooms within 30-60min by train of the Hauptbanhof. In addition to the places Kenneth listed I would also recommend places served by the Bayerische Oberlandbahn (BOB), a private train line that runs from the Hauptbahnhof to areas of the foothill of the alps. They sell a day ticket that covers the BOB lines and Munich city center.

I've personally had good luck getting reasonable last minute Oktoberfest rooms around Bad Tolz, Tergernsee and Holzkirchen south of Munich. Holzkirchen is reachable by S-Bahn and looks like the Alpinplus hotel there is still avialable for the first weekend of Oktoberfest.

Thanks for the suggestions! Decided to bite the bullet and spend more than we wanted and got a room near the train station that had good user reviews.
