Octoberfest crowds OUTSIDE Munich

We are planning a family trip to Bavaria, and the best dates just happen to coincide w/ Octoberfest in which we are not interested. We can avoid Munich during this time, but I'm concerned if the crowds spill into other nearby attractions. Will it be more difficult, for example to see Neuschwanstein / Hohenschwangau? We also hope to visit Salzburg & Rothenburg on this trip. I'm concerned that the tourists who come for Octoberfest, will use the same time to visit other nearby areas. Or, do they concentrate fully on Munich?

Our original plan was to visit Northern Italy, but because the Expo will be in Milan at the same time, we were warned that many surrounding areas in Northern Italy (including Venice & Cinque Terra) will be much more crowded, as tour companies plan their itinerary to include Expo and nearby areas.

There may be people sleeping in Salzburg and commuting in to Octoberfest in Munich -- make sure you have hotel reservation!!

You may not encounter significant crowds beyond the outskirts of Munich, but hotel rates go up all over Bavaria around Oktoberfest.

Hi,

We've been to Bavaria a few times while Oktoberfest was going on. Outside of Munich, we never even knew it was happening. We stayed in Mittenwald, Berchtesgaden area and Fuessen. You'll have no troubles and will not even know that it's taking place.

We stayed in Schliersee for a week during Oktoberfest. There was no sign of extra crowds outside of Munich. We had a car, but the two days we went into Munich (one for Oktoberfest and another to spend in the city) we took the train. Even in Munich it wasn't bad except the train station was busier than usual.

I was in Bavaria a couple of years ago during Oktoberfest. It was the last Saturday, and the ticket kiosk for the castles was mobbed. I think a lot of people were in Bavaria for Oktoberfest and taking a side trip to Füssen. On the other hand, I was at Linderhof for the last Friday, and it did not seem unusually crowded. I was in Landsberg on Saturday night, and my hotel didn't seem to be sold out.

I've heard that there's some spillover that makes Neuschwanstein a little more crowded than normal for that time of year, but that's about it. Although hotels were busier than normal, I didn't find the inner ring of Munich any bustling than normal for a city it's size. The biggest crowds I've ever seen in the center of Munich? Right before and after a Bayern München home game!
