We will be staying in the Rhine Valley in Boppard over the October 3rd national holiday. What can we expect to be closed? I assume all shops but will restaurants close, attractions, etc.? Trying to plan our itinerary with the closures in mind so we are not caught unawares.

Stores are closed on national holidays, but restaurants, museums and tourist attractions are usually open as they do a booming business on those days.
And regional public transport will operate in Sunday mode.
btw: this year the national German Unity Day celebrations will happen in Schwerin. It changes every year between state capitals.
We were in Dresden a few years back having arrived the night before the holiday. We had a wonderful time wandering the town and visiting the local outdoor celebrations.
